Second wave of layoffs follows acquisition Activision Blizzard companies Microsoft. In internal communication Phil Spencer announced that it would lay off another 650 employees in its gaming division. The first round took place earlier this year and was widely criticized. In contrast, education and game development are not interrupted this time.
Most of the roughly 650 employees being laid off are expected to be in corporate and support roles. So it’s all about the association with the Call of Duty publisher. At Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, the roles in administrative and business positions overlap.
“Over the past year, our goal has been to minimize disruption while welcoming new teams and enabling them to work as efficiently as possible,” CEO Phil Spencer explains this in an internal email.
“As part of the restructuring of our teams following the acquisition and management of our business, we have made the decision to eliminate approximately 650 positions in Microsoft Gaming – primarily corporate and support functions – to position our business for long-term success.” adds Spencer.
In it he emphasizes that No studios will close due to layoffs, and no games will be cancelled. The goal is to unite teams and resources for sustainable future growth.
About 1,900 people lost their jobs at Microsoft earlier this year.
