Gamescom this year was extremely interesting in terms of Czech games. Already at the inaugural conference Opening Night Live, the new Mafia was presented and the premiere gameplay trailer for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was released, followed a day later by over 20 minutes of gameplay footage.

The long-awaited medieval RPG from Warhorse was also available as a playable demo version right on the exhibition floor in one of the halls of the Cologne Exhibition Centre. In these spaces, I was greeted by a themed stand that temporarily transported me to a medieval Czech village. Visitors could watch knightly duels in a kolbiště, a blacksmith’s workshop and a small market with various items.

In addition, these backdrops featured real people in period costumes, giving the entire booth a lively atmosphere. Compared to the standard booths with a few gaming stations and individual game logos, this was a nice change that managed to interest individual visitors and draw attention to the game itself.

After entering a separate section with separate gaming stations and a small anabasis with a choice of localization (all gaming stations were initially set to German), I was able to start playing. The title greeted me with a plot film in which the main character Jindřich, together with his friend Jan Ptáček, tried to escape from annoying clutches. The couple finally found shelter in the cottage of the herbalist Božena. She took on the struggle of the physically and mentally wounded heroes.

Already from this opening movie it became quite clear how big a step the studio has made compared to the first part of 2018 in the area of cutscenes. It is not only about the quality of the story animation, which can easily be compared with traditional AAA games of famous studios, but also about the overall more cinematic impression, which pleasantly surprised me.

The transition to the gameplay was followed by a trifle of traditional activities from the first part in the form of eating, washing in the bath and bandaging a wound. After that, the first short dialogue with the aforementioned Bozena took place, thanks to which I was able to appreciate the quality of the faces. In this direction, the game has also made decent progress, thanks to which the second Kingdom Come is certainly not far behind its competitors.

The dialogue with Bozena was followed by the first task, which was divided into two parts. In the first, I had to collect certain herbs and flowers in a nearby meadow, from which Bozena then created a potion for Mr. Ptacek, who was not in the mood for a fight. The second part of the task was to bury the corpse of one of the aforementioned paws, for which the previous encounter had been fatal. In both cases, these were simple tasks, more of a tutorial format, thanks to which it was possible to leave Bozena’s cottage for the first time and explore the surrounding environment.

In this area, the studio’s higher production values, the increase in the number of employees and the experience of individual developers were also very noticeable. In short, the second part made a really big leap forward in all important directions compared to the first part. Unfortunately, the available demo version in my case did not give a taste of the battle.

However, I could at least “acquire” one of the new items in the form of a crossbow, which will be supplemented by other early firearms and firearms. First of all, given the chosen historical period, swords and axes will continue to play. A special mention should be made of the redesigned interface, which left a clearer impression on me.

The initial taste of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II confirmed the impression I got from the demos and trailers. In short, it is a larger, more cinematic and, from a technical point of view, much more complex title, which, however, at its core remains true to the main aspects of the first part, with an emphasis on realism and a credible interpretation of the Middle East era in the Czech lands.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II will be released on February 11th on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
