The Chinese RPG Black Myth: Wukong, which was released today, was indeed highly anticipated. However, the developers probably did not expect the game to be so successful that it would go down in history with its extremely impressive statistics.

The game was released simultaneously on PS5 and PC. While we don’t have console numbers, we can find the number of concurrent PC players on SteamDB. The game was released at 4:00 AM CEST and almost immediately surpassed Baldur’s Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, or Elden Ring.

Reaching 1 million concurrent players took just 60 minutes, the fastest in Steam history. The game has since surpassed Cyberpunk 2077, Dota 2, and Lost Ark, and currently sits in 4th place overall. At the time of writing, the game has around 1.4 million players, making it by far the most successful single-player game by that metric. The reigning Cyberpunk has 400,000 fewer.
