Creating the Dark Urge storyline was not easy for the Baldur’s Gate 3 writers.

It’s not that your entire journey through Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t full of violence. There’s a lot of bloodshed in this game, so the player doesn’t really care about what’s going on around them. But if you like to indulge your dark side, there’s the character Dark Urge, who does things from start to finish that no sane person would agree with. You’d think the author would enjoy writing something like that. However, the reality seems to be quite different. Baudelaire Welch didn’t enjoy writing lines for Dark Urge, primarily due to her dislike of violence.

It sounds impossible that someone who doesn’t like violence could write a character who actually does violent things all the time so well. But that’s actually how it should be. Writer-director Adam Smith commented on the reason Welch was cast: “When you find someone who really likes gore and horror, they want it to be cool… [Dark Urge] “came from someone who thinks, ‘These things are so fucking awful!’ It gave it something that I couldn’t bring to it; that someone who’s been writing horror for 30 years couldn’t bring to it. It was the poignancy that made the enjoyment of it somehow perverse and weird and bizarre and strange.”

And he’s right, because much of the action you’ll experience is simply shocking. Welch has done a great job, and the studio itself has supported it with excellent animation. We’ll be able to see its full steps when Patch 7 launches for Baldur’s Gate 3 later this year. The game itself is available on PC, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
