Cancellation of life by you surprised many of us. The ambitious competition for Sims left a big mark on the company’s latest financial results Paradox Interactive. The Swedish publisher reports a 90% drop in operating profit for the latest quarter.
The main reason is the write-off of the cancelled game Life by You and its development costs, which amounted to approximately 208 million Swedish crowns. That’s more than 467 million Czech crowns.
As a result, profit was only SEK 37 million, compared to SEK 293 million in the same quarter last year.
Second quarter of the year at Paradox ends with mixed feelingsOn the one hand, the company’s core business, which is grand strategy games and additional content for them (namely Age of Wonders 4, Crusader Kings 3, Hearts of Iron 4, Stellaris and Victoria 3), turned out to be very successful. On the other hand, Life by You had to be cancelled because the game failed to live up to expectations.
“It’s clear that we made some bad decisions on several projects, especially outside of our core, and that needs to change,” Paradox CEO Fredrik Wester adds candidly. This also confirms retreat from these risky gamesParadox intends to focus on secure projects.
In its previous financial report, Paradox said it had nearly 10 games in development. Between them, Prison Architect 2 And Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2. Plus there are hints Europe Universalis 5.
This is also disappointing. Cities: Horizons 2. Fortunately, the second part of the city construction and management simulator, as Wester boasted, is gaining momentum. The developers have prepared updates with more extensive changes to the systems. But players continue to complain about errors, crashes and poor optimization.
