It is not easy to continue successful games. Overwatch 2, whose entry into the gaming scene was accompanied by a number of controversial moments, could tell its own story. In fact, it can be stated that even today it is not in the best shape. Therefore, it is not surprising that various gaming studios are trying to create a work that can compete with the famous brand.
One very similar work is, for example, the 5v5 shooter Concord, which is firmly tied to Sony, which in this case took on the role of publisher. We were able to try it out ourselves this weekend, thanks to which we now have an idea of how it actually works here.
Character development is paramount in Concord
At its core, Concord is another in a series of multiplayer shooters that rely heavily on character development and a simple map format. In this case, I felt that the heroes and their detail play a much more fundamental role than elsewhere. Each of them is essentially unique and differs from other fighters not only in abilities and weapons. This would not be so surprising. But they all also have different mobility than their competitors.
As an example, I will take characters that are as different from each other as night from day. On one side is the extremely fast alien IT-Z. With her agility, she can playfully run away from her pursuers, after which she easily falls on their backs at the first opportunity and deals considerable damage. The complete opposite of this character is the armored Emari, who is quite poor in terms of mobility and, unlike Reinhardt from Overwatch, does not have any serious acceleration, so when she goes somewhere, it takes quite a long time.
Mobility is, in my opinion, one of the factors that determines whether you will succeed or not in Concord. More specifically, understanding that not all heroes move at the same speed. If a team refuses to “submit” to the pace of one of the heavy tanks during group fights, it can turn out badly for its members. Because the more mobile specialists in Concord do not have the same stamina as their heavy brothers, so they usually go out as quickly as a candle in a gust of wind.
Another element that determines whether you will succeed in team fights is your understanding of weapons. Each of the heroes has his own tool, which does not mean that the palette with which you operate is significantly limited. Some have silenced pistols, crossbows, submachine guns or grenade launchers. The presented Emari, for example, has a spinner at hand in Concord, which is easy to spin, but difficult to stop. However, my personal favorite was the fighter with a rocket launcher, whose equipment was also reflected in the special abilities he was able to use against his enemies.
His ability to launch himself into the air and then land with a devastating crash made life quite unpleasant for the competitors at times. Some heroes go into battle with purely offensive skills, while others actually buff the rest of the team with bulletproof walls, shields or mobile health packs, which are very similar to the format that Quake III Arena came with. The maps that the battles take place on are currently well designed. In fact, they match the format of the chosen hero design, so we have smaller destinations that offer the player a certain amount of points for flanking and various forms of tactics. However, you will certainly not be knee-deep in them, and the same goes for the game modes.
Concord has a solid foundation, but it doesn’t guarantee success.
If there’s one genre in the gaming scene right now that truly doesn’t need constant additions, it’s the multiplayer first-person shooter, without a doubt. Fans of more dynamic projects, realistic shooters, and Call of Duty-like stuff will benefit from the high pressure. In fact, you won’t find a group in the current spectrum that hasn’t found a name that suits them in some way. In fact, Concord reminds me a lot of LawBreakers.
That you don’t remember this game anymore? I’m not too surprised because it was another first-person shooter in a similar setting. While it had a solid foundation and decent gameplay, it wasn’t enough to be successful. A very similar situation could arise in this case. Even the news from the developers at Firewalk Studios shows that the beta doesn’t disappoint in terms of gameplay. But the problem is that compared to Overwatch 2 or Valorant, it’s nothing special. The need to buy factor could hurt the game a lot. However, it’s possible that after release, the creators will come up with unique modes or another way to give their game a face. But I wouldn’t put too much faith in that.
Concord will be released on PC and PlayStation 5 on August 23, 2024.
