It’s been more than three months since the announcement, but the promised FSR 3.1 technology has finally arrived. With the new version, AMD offers improved scaling, separate image generation (which can now also be used with another scaler besides FSR), or support for Vulkan and Xbox GDK. AMD has changed the upscaling algorithm after a very long time.
The technology has now reached five games, all of which are Sony titles ported to PC by Nixxes: Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man Remastered, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Support for a PC port of God of War: Ragnarök, due out in September and developed by Jetpack Interactive, is also promised.
But what are the results in terms of image quality? The first tests, conducted for example by YouTuber Daniel Owen or the Edwin channel, are unfortunately very mixed. AMD was mainly attracted by the refinement of the very aggressive upscaling, and although the pixelation of distant objects has been solved, the new version, on the contrary, has increased flickering for those closer to the camera, which is visible in frames from Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, as well as, for example, the moiré effect that can be seen on the carpet in the intro.
Of course, he will still need more detailed tests, but so far it seems that the improvement is not as great as we would like. The new version of AMD technology does not yet reach the quality of DLSS.
