Sony Aims for 4K 60fps/8K 30fps with PSSR Upscaling

Not even a day has passed since we wrote more details about the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro console. At the same time, Sunday’s information followed a large leak that occurred on Friday. But we’re not done yet, because Tom Henderson has revealed more interesting details based on a document leaked to his Insider Gaming magazine.

These mainly concern PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, which will work similarly to Nvidia’s DLSS in that it uses an AI computing chip that will house the PS5 Pro. According to information available to Henderson, PSSR on the PlayStation 5 Pro should target 4K at 60fps and 8K at 30fps, respectively. But this is only a kind of internal plan and it is unclear whether this will actually happen. As we already know from Friday’s leak, 8K support may not even be present at launch, but will come later.

And looking even further into the future, Sony is targeting 4K resolution at 120fps or 8K at 60fps with PSSR. However, due to hardware, this resolution and frame rate cannot be achieved on the PS5 Pro, so this is an internal goal for the upcoming console, apparently the PlayStation 6.

Insider Gaming then conducted two more internal tests of unnamed third-party PlayStation 5 Pro games. The first game to offer Performance mode at 1080p at 60fps or Quality mode at 1800p at 30fps on the base PS5 must run at 1440p at 60fps on the Pro console.

The magazine claims that PSSR was used in this case, but it is not entirely clear from the text what exactly is meant. This could be upping the resolution from 1080p to the aforementioned 1440p (which would be quite disappointing given the 45% increase in performance) or, more likely, 1440p is the native resolution and the image is upscaled to 4K using PSSR. This would make sense given Sony’s already mentioned goal, as well as the goal stated for this game, which states that a PS5 Pro game should offer image quality in Quality mode with frame rates in Performance mode.

For the second name the test is much simpler. Henderson writes that a game that ran at 60fps without ray tracing on the base PlayStation 5 can run at 60fps with ray tracing effects on the PS5 Pro.

Finally, I would like to remind you that according to current information, the improved console should appear this fall.
