Mario and Bowser have been fighting over princesses for decades, so it’s no surprise that original villain was forgotten. Already in 1981 it was unrealistic 43 Years later, Mario fought in the arcades of the time with the monkey Donkey Kong, who endlessly threw barrels at him from above. Thanks to this, a few years later the Gameboy managed to create a puzzle platformer, and in 2003 a successful sequel called Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which we’ll talk a little about today. But a review of a game from twenty years ago wouldn’t be very helpful. Luckily, I’m talking about the recently released remake for Nintendo Switch, which aims to bring this old handheld game to a modern device.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong is completely similar to the original version. simple jumper with an even simpler premise interspersed with puzzles and challenges. Long story short, Donkey Kong is watching TV one day and suddenly sees an advertisement for new Mario toys. You can’t pay with bananas, so he goes into a toy factory and steals an entire bag for himself. Mario is understandably financially shocked by this, so he goes after Donkey Kong and begins a series of 130 levels where you’ll basically be jumping on colored buttons, thereby changing the structure of the levels, carrying and throwing things where they belong, and the like .
Each chapter contains six levels with different tasks, and in each level you are asked to find the key to the door and preferably collect small gifts scattered throughout the level. Various enemies walking here and there, platforms with a timer and the like will prevent you from doing this. After these six levels, you end up in Donkey Kong each time, and it’s time for a boss fight, which, unfortunately, doesn’t change much throughout the game. Once you complete the first six chapters, you will unlock “pros“levels. They are a little more difficult and you will have to get not only yourself, but also the little robot Mario, who is carrying the key to the goal all the time. But what’s worse is that you will also be unlocked throughout the game. expert levels that are sure to make you sweat.
In terms of gameplay, the remake is very similar to the original. Most levels are absolutely exact copy, but there are also twelve new ones. In addition, there is a new co-op mode. There are no new levels, but you can complete the entire game in two. The remake was also quite simplified. You need to collect more lives and there will be no more fall damage. In the original I thought “fall damage” added another interesting problem to it. I couldn’t just send him falling six stories to the ground. I had to think about where to go, which seemed more interesting to me.
