The RTX Portal now supports Ray Reconstruction and RTX IO.

It’s been almost a year and a half since the release of the RTX remaster of Portal, one of the first games to use path tracing. In the meantime, we’ve seen several other RTX remasters of older games, as well as new games that allow path tracking to be enabled, namely Cyberpunk 2077 or Alan Wake 2. In any case, Nvidia didn’t mind the improved version of Portal. or, and out of the blue, on Thursday they announced an update that is already available.

The main innovation is two technologies. The first is DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction (RR), which improves the visual quality of ray tracing effects through reconstruction using trained AI. RR replaces older, manually tuned noise gates that always had to be used in one combination or another to achieve a reliable compromise.

Ray Reconstruction is a unified technology that cleans and sharpens images. This will also make reflections and other effects appear faster. Unlike frame generation (RTX 40 only), you can enable ray reconstruction on all RTX cards (i.e. RTX 20 series and above).

The second technology is RTX IO, which decompresses the GPU, thereby offloading the CPU, allowing for faster texture loading and smaller file sizes. This technology also works on all RTX cards.

The latest addition is 6 new bricks with different designs and materials that interact realistically with the environment.

You can download the update right now. The portal itself with RTX is available free of charge to all owners of the original game.
