Last September, we reported that Star Wars Jedi game director Stig Asmussen had left Respawn, even though he said it was supposed to be a trilogy. Someone else will have to finish the job, but Asmussen certainly hasn’t left the gaming industry. And we learned about his plans today from a press release and various media outlets.
Asmussen founded a new studio called Giant Skull in Los Angeles. It currently employs about 30 people, but boasts (see IGN interview) that employees can choose to work exclusively in the office, only from home, or take a hybrid approach.
“Giant Skull Studio’s culture is one of creativity and curiosity” Asmussen said in a statement. “We’ve assembled a talented team known for their compelling storytelling, epic combat and immersive exploration, and our goal is to create a rich world that will keep players immersed in it for years to come.”
Asmussen, who will lead the studio as CEO, is a game development veteran with over 25 years in the industry. Before Respawn, he worked, for example, at the Santa Monica studio as an art director and then game director for God of War 2 and 3.
However, the leadership also includes several of Asmussen’s former colleagues at Respawn. This is, for example, technical director John Carr (technical director of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor) or design director Jeff Maggers (the same role for both parts of Star Wars Jedi). Other members of the leadership team were then often sent to Giant Skull from Epic Games: art director Patrick Murphy (same role for Fortnite, and before that at Riot Games for League of Legends and Valorant), lead producer Lauren McLemore (same role for Fortnite game) and animation director Brian Campbell (same role at Epic Games). The final leading member is COO and CFO Anthony Scott, a Rocksteady veteran who went on to lead Unbroken Studios.
The studio’s first project will be a premium AAA third-person single-player action-adventure game with an emphasis on gameplay and story, built on Unreal Engine 5. However, Asmussen has not yet wished to disclose whether this will be a new IP or a licensed version. a game. At the same time, he did not rule out possible cooperation with a major publishing house, although for now the studio must be financially secure.
Thanks to cryptic messages on the official website, we learned that they began creating several concepts last September. Work on one of them began in January of this year. In any case, we will have to wait for some time for the result.
