Spencer: We support physical media, but we have to adapt to customer needs

Phil Spencer commented on the relationship in an interview with journalist Steven Totil Xbox release physical copies of games. As such, he addressed speculation about the shape of an improved Xbox Series X or cuts to the physical release team as part of the January layoffs. However, the department should not be completely abolished.

According to Spencer, Microsoft has no plans to stop releasing games physically in the near future, but is guided by player demand: “We support physical media, but we don’t need to push it out too much. consumer demand. We release games both physically and digitally and really just follow what the customers want. I think our job is to give what the majority of customers want. Nowadays, most customers buy games digitally.”

The head of Microsoft Gaming is also indirectly reacting to the leaked form of the upcoming Xbox update, which should get rid of the mechanic. However, he does not confirm the relevance of the information, indicating several times that the contents of the documents and the company’s plans could have changed.

“Game consoles have become almost the last consumer electronics that have mechanics. This is really a problem in terms of the number of mechanical manufacturers and the associated costs. (…) When you have fewer suppliers and fewer buyers, it affects the price of mechanics,” says Spencer.

“But I want to say that our strategy does not depend on people going completely digital. Getting rid of physical copies is not really strategic for us,” he adds.
