FromSoftware they strengthen the Japanese studio has become the exclusive owner of the rights to Elden Ring. The biggest hit from the creators of Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice came out less than two years ago. The company was a global publisher Bandai Namcothat is, with the exception of Japan, where the game was released by FromSoftware itself.
FromSoftware shared the trademark with Bandai Namco. But this no longer applies. U.S. Patent and Trademark Office documents show the change occurred sometime in March last year. Elden Ring was released in Feb/Feb 2022 and sold 20 million copies in its first year.
Bringing rights to Elden Ring under FromSoftware is interesting given that Tencent And Sony owns 30% of FromSoftware shares. Investments totaling 36.4 billion yen were made in the summer of 2022. Sony owns 14.09 percent of FromSoftware, while Tencent owns 16.25 percent. FromSoftware’s parent company, Kadokawa Corporation, retained a 69.66% stake. Money from Sony and Tencent should have been invested in the development of strong video game brands.
These investments are rumored to have helped FromSoftware become independent. Now, perhaps, the studio will independently publish games. Others are concerned that Sony won’t gain more influence and that more games will be available beyond PlayStation and PC.
It is currently being developed at FromSoftware. Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for Elden Ring, has no set release date. Tencent is also reportedly preparing a mobile version of Elden Ring.
