Developers from the South Korean studio Shift Up paid special attention to how the main character Eva looks from behind. The game director spoke about this in an interview with the editors of GamesRadar+. Hyun Tae Kim and gave insight into the team’s philosophy when creating a female protagonist.
“When designing, we dedicated special attention to the back of the figure, because during the game the player always looks at his back. This is what they see the most, so we thought it was very important,” he said.
“Honestly, when I play a game, I want to see someone who looks better than me. This is what I want. I don’t want to see something normal, I want to see something perfect. I think it’s you [určité] forms of entertainment are very important. After all, this type of entertainment is for adults,” he added.
According to Kim, people look at game characters differently—literally: “I personally think that compared to movies, anime, manga, etc. people are especially strict about games. “In games, people can look at unrealistically beautiful characters from different angles, which is not always flattering.”
The game director believes that creating such a character today also requires a certain amount of courage. However, he believes that this design “can demonstrate charm and appeal without compromising the game’s story or atmosphere.”
Kim also discussed Eve’s personality, which will develop during the game. We certainly shouldn’t feel any fundamental sympathy for her from the start. “However, as the game progresses, he takes on more and more of the burden and is forced to make important decisions. He comes into contact with more characters and other people and becomes more human. At first, he looks more like a soldier and does not have special emotions or expressive skills. As the game and story progress, you can see her emotions change.”
Stellar Blade is published by Sony and released exclusively on PlayStation 5 already 26 April.
