War. One word that contains more horror than any other. For some it was a romantic idea of heroism and self-sacrifice for one’s nation, for others it was an obsession and object of study, and for all it was a surreal pile of pain and human suffering.
I admit, thanks in part to the film Knights of Heaven I was rather one of those romantics who admires heroism, the style of old uniforms or the beauty of wooden biplanes. Instead of romance, I became acquainted with the real face of war, full of screams in the trenches and halls, crushed bones, blood-soaked rags and the deadly Hypert fog. Killing in war video games is often fun. But perhaps it’s time to get acquainted with its much more depressive form.
As a child, I often complained about why so few games used the circus period of a century ago. Fortunately, they gradually began to appear and I came to my senses. Valiant Hearts, Battlefield 1, Verdun, Iron Harvest or Last train home since last year. The last mentioned title, in addition to combat, focused at least slightly on the ills of war, and in addition to wounds, scabies, for example, had to be treated.
War Hospital is built on this foundation, and instead of fighting a war, you manage a field hospital. Thanks to this, my dream of playing a game reminiscent of the series came true. M*A*S*H.
