Ace Attorney isn’t going anywhere, the next installment will probably use the RE Engine

In just a few days, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy will be released, the third collection of games in the legal series, spanning volumes four through six. Previously, they were only available on the Nintendo DS (Apollo Justice) and 3DS (Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice) systems, respectively. In this context, the Japanese magazine 4Gamer interviewed the producer of the new collection, Kenichi Hashimoto, who, among other things, mentioned a rather interesting thing about the future of the series (when asked directly about it). This part of the interview was translated into English by Nintendo Everything magazine:

“There’s nothing to talk about right now” Hashimoto says “but we have gained a lot of knowledge about RE Engin. I can say that the Ace Attorney series will not end, so in that sense, I think you can look forward to what comes next.”

While this is certainly not a definitive confirmation, Hashimoto’s statement does at least suggest that either an entirely new volume or at least another collection is in the works (at that point, virtually only a spin-off duology will be offered.” Investigations”).

At the same time, given the claim of gaining knowledge of the RE Engine (Capcom’s internal engine), we can almost certainly say that the next game will run on it. And this makes sense, since Capcom uses the engine for every possible genre. The remastered first Ace Attorney trilogy used Unity, but last year’s Ghost Trick remaster and this year’s Apollo Justice Trilogy use the RE Engine.

Therefore, the question of future work is more of a “when” than an “if”. Apparently, the series is doing very well, as confirmed by Capcom’s COO last April. The first trilogy has already sold 2.6 million copies and is currently enjoying its best month ever on Steam, with nearly 4,000 concurrent players.
