Steam is ending support for older versions of Windows

The popular gaming client Steam will stop supporting older versions of the Windows operating system on January 1. Specifically, we are talking about versions Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. As the new year begins, Steam will no longer be able to run or play select games on these operating system variants.

The only way to prevent this is update to a newer version in the form of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is important to note that Valve announced the end of support for older versions of Windows back in March, so this is not new information and the current news serves more as a reminder.

“As of January 1, 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems, which means the Steam client will no longer work on them. Therefore, if you want to continue using the client and play games purchased on Steam, you will need to update to a newer version of Windows.

The reason for this change is the fact that key functions of the Steam client depend on the built-in Google Chrome browser, which has ceased (or will no longer) support these operating systems. Additionally, the customer required (and continues to require) security updates and features only available on Windows 10 and later.” Valve representatives are announcing the end of support for older versions of Windows.
