Do you know what happened less than ten months ago? We have published a review of the latest part of the legendary construction series The Settlers. The part that we think sent her down a one-way road to the grave. But don’t panic. Salvation is approaching in the form of the roguelike city builder Against the Storm. This game is leaving early access on Steam after a year to fill a gap in the market for everyone. a comprehensive construction strategy focusing not only on settlement management, but also on combating unfavorable conditions. And unlike Settlers, this game, on the contrary, can be said to take a one-way road straight to the top.
Against the Storm perfectly hints at the basis of the entire title right in its title. As a governor, you will have to travel with your caravan from the center of the map, ruled by the Smoldering City, to the very edges of the local empire. After a certain distance you will have to calm down and create a self-sufficient settlementbefore you can move on. However, don’t give yourself too much time because time is against you. After a certain number of years, the entire area will die out. Morbidity, which completely destroys everything and digs up biomes. There will always only be the Smoldering City left, from which you will then begin the next quest.
In “Against the Storm” literally you will go against the storm. And this is with the goal of gradually placing seals that delay her so that you can get more resources for your queen and her city. This restarting of cycles and gradual collection of raw materials is one of the highlights of the game. It not only guarantees basically endless gameplaybut also allows for gradual improvement.
You can exchange the collected raw materials for gradual improvements that will help you in the actual construction of settlements. You get all kinds of percentage bonuses, building blueprints, new features or improvements. In short, everything you can imagine this may be useful for you in strategy rogue-lite. From the start you should expect your settlements to be a little sparse and like a single hill for a few hours, but over time they will grow into larger, more complex and varied places. Partially thanks to you, and partially due to the fact that you were on your neck. more and more responsibilities.
While we have no doubt that you need to have at least some strategic ability to play this game, this gradual gradation of mechanics and options allows you smoothly flow into more complex mechanisms. The game directly or indirectly teaches you certain things very slowly as you get to them at your own pace.
This gradually brings us to the construction of the settlements themselves, which, after all, is the essence of the game. But even before that, we need to choose a place on the map where we will go. At first, the choice is not particularly difficult.. More or less any location will do. However, it is this choice that will affect not only the biome and environment in which the settlement will be located, but also what natural resources you will find, what rewards you will receive for your successes, what positive bonuses await you and, above all, there will be whether something negative awaits you. In the same way, you’ll have to name your settlement, choose a base caravan – that is, what villagers and raw materials you’ll start with – and perhaps what additional basic raw materials you’ll take with you.
Over time and as complexity increases, these choices will become more and more demanding. The first few hours are just important to turn it on somehow, but later you will carefully study which direction to move and whether it is worth populating one place next to it, because even if there is a worse biome waiting for you there, you will still get a big reward and get closer to print.
