Gamescom is a place where developers big and small can showcase their amazing projects. Among the huge influx of games of all kinds, a few games caught our attention at Gamescom this year, and one of them was the story-driven action-adventure Dustborn. We were lucky to catch this one Design Director Martin Bruusgaard from Red Thread Gameswho told us about the game not only from his point of view.
As mentioned, Dustborn is a story-driven adventure game. The game is about a woman named Pax and a group of other outcasts and so-called “anomalies“. People who are able to turn their words into weapons. Words have magical powers in this world and, just like in the real world, they can bring people closer and further apart. Just in a slightly more literal sense. People gained this special power after an event called Broadcast.
“Essentially, this is a disinformation apocalypse that has hurt many people and given them special skills. These people are called abnormal and they are capable of turning their words into weapons. They can physically and psychologically affect others.“
As stated at the end, the game takes place in America. Specifically, in the alternative future of 2030, which should remind no one of some kind of dystopian fiction, but a kind of “neo-western“However, we are also talking about America, which not everyone needs to recognize at first sight.
“New borders have appeared, some states have disappeared, and it is truly a divided America. So it’s an interesting environment.“
But a fractured America isn’t the only thing that strikes Dustborn at first glance. Already from the initial trailer, you can see that the game focuses on a group of people on the road. Not only because of the style so the game might be a bit like the storybook Road 96. According to Martin Bruusgaard, this is what makes Dustborn special when we asked him about it, because it offers a few surprises.
“For us, the most interesting element is the road trip. I think it’s a great setting for the game. And in such an environment, which is a bit like an alternative reality, it presents many surprises. You are traveling through an alternative America, and there is a lot of interesting things there. Lots of characters to meet: robots, evil technocrats, zombie robots and the like. This environment is really interesting for us.“
