The following article contains no spoilers for the story itself, but does reveal one very unique passage from the game Alan Wake 2. So if you haven’t played the game yet and don’t want to miss the surprise, don’t read on.
Alan Wake 2 has been out for over a week now, so you can read our review, in which we gave the game a full 10 out of 10, or listen to the podcast where we dissect the title in detail. And while we wait for additional content in the form of New Game+ and story DLC, interesting information about development is starting to emerge. One of them was presented by game directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley on the Friends Per Second podcast.
Of course, we were talking about the fourth chapter of “Dedication” called “We Sing”, which has become an absolute phenomenon on the Internet and many players call it the best segment of a video game in recent years. In reality, however, this interactive musical didn’t need to be in the game at all. Of course, Sam Lake originally came up with the idea; he supposedly tried it in Control, where it didn’t work out (although we have Ashtray Maze, made in a similar style).
“I remember,” Rowley says, “he (Sam Lake) came to me and said, ‘I want to do a musical,’ and I was like, ‘You’re crazy, what are you talking about?’ “Then Lake and Rowley discussed how they were doing and it wasn’t easy at all.
“It was very, very difficult to include a musical in it for a lot of reasons,” says Sam Lake. “There were a lot of production meetings (where people said), ‘Come on, we need to cut this,’ and I said, ‘Absolutely not, we won’t cut it.’
Initially, the walkthrough was supposed to take place in the studio itself and was supposed to be more in-game, but in the end they decided to make the episode mainly from live-action footage, since creating in-game cutscenes would be too difficult. .
By the way, interesting fact at the end: As you probably know, the entire Remedy Connected universe is really complex, so how does Sam Lake remember everything? In the podcast, he admitted that he had to go to the Alan Wake Wiki fan page several times and remember some of the first one. No one can remember everything.
