Designer Josh Sawyer from Obsidian Entertainment in an interview with Touch Arcade magazine, he answered which game sequel he would like to create if he had an unlimited budget – Pentiment 2, Pillars of Eternity 3 or a Fallout: New Vegas sequel.
Sawyer isn’t thinking about the first game right now: “I don’t think I would have made Pentiment 2. I’m very, very happy with that game. It’s not that I never want to get back to it, but I just finished it, so I’ll probably wait a little longer.”
From the three named, the game director will choose the continuation of the series. Pillars of Eternity. “I think I would try Pillars 3 because I know what the budget is for. [Pillars of Eternity II:] Deadfire, and it wasn’t big, and I’ve heard from a lot of people what the budget was for Baldur’s Gate 3, and I’m not going to talk about numbers, but if I had it, I would definitely make Pillars. 3,” he says.
The budget for the second Pillars of Eternity was about $4.5 million, while the developers from Larian had more than $100 million for the new Baldur’s Gate. Both Pillars of Eternity also received crowdfunding. If it weren’t for him, Sawyer would have considered turn-based combat like how Larian designed it, rather than real-time combat with pause.
“But the game wasn’t made for that. I think developing a turn-based combat game with less skirmishes and combat, but much more tactical, would be a lot of fun. And amazing cut scenes and everything. That would be great,” he adds.
