In 2019, Glen Schofield, one of the main creators of the Dead Space series, founded his own studio called Striking Distance. The goal was to create a sci-fi horror game that would act as a sort of spiritual successor to Dead Space itself, and that idea came to fruition in The Callisto Protocol. We saw the release in December last year, but the reaction was quite mixed, and the disastrous state of the PC version did not help, but, fortunately, this was fixed quite quickly. Over time, the game received several patches and additional content, culminating in the story expansion Final Transmission. Unfortunately, as you can read in our review, it wasn’t very successful.
While there had been talk of a potential second installment even before its release, the brand’s fortunes grew increasingly worse, followed by a wave of layoffs in August that reportedly affected more than 30 people. But as Jason Schreier wrote for Bloomberg today, that’s not all.
Krafton, Striking Distance’s parent company, has confirmed that founder and current chief Glen Schofield is leaving the studio, who has “decided to pursue other opportunities.” It was supposed to be a voluntary departure, although Schofield himself called it “bittersweet”. Along with him, the current COO and CFO are leaving the company. Schofield will be replaced as head of the studio by current CDO Steve Papoutsis.
It’s hard to say what this will mean for the studio itself and whether we’ll ever see a game from them again. However, Crafton told Bloomberg that “there are no changes to the studio’s plans.” But we’ll have to wait and see if that’s actually the case.
