According to Layden, the gaming industry has to contend not only with rise in game development costswhich he called an existential threat, but also with large companies outside the industrywho are starting to get interested in this industry. He named Google, Netflix, Apple and Amazon. According to him, they all want to bite off billions of dollars a year and are confusing. He called them barbarians at the gate.

Leiden cited Apple and Netflix as examples. The first company revolutionized the music industry when it started selling music tracks on its platform for 99 cents, where before you had to buy an entire album. In turn, Netflix has revolutionized the film industry by replacing cinemas as the main source of new films in favor of streaming.

But at the moment, these companies are more interested in the video game industry. they broke their teeth. Perhaps this is a hint at the failure of Google Stadia, as well as Amazon, which also completely fails to attract gamers.

Layden hopes the video game industry will take care of the disruption and not need Google or Amazon to reverse the situation. “We need to be smart enough to see the coming changes and prepare for such developments,” he added.

Recall that in 2020, Laiden called the development of AAA games unsustainable due to ever larger and longer games.
