Editor’s Review for August – Zing

At the beginning of August, I was planning “out of curiosity” to try to turn on the PC version of the “expected RPG” for a few hours, but rather just to see if I liked the game enough to play from the very beginning. complete the release of the console version in September. Probably, it is not necessary to explain that this plan flew out the window on the same night, but instead I had a whole series of sleepless nights on my plate, completely absorbed in this monumental work. We all kind of suspected that it would be good, but no one (not even the developers themselves) had any idea how huge a success it would be and how millions of people would love this extraordinary work that sets a new bar. not only for the entire genre, but also for the flow, depth and overall development of games in general.

September will be the start of the annual fall “pre-Christmas” gaming season – just in case, most games are timed to coincide with one or another participation during the pre-Christmas sales and discounts (either as new items or “on sale”). because there are about three times as many games sold at this time of the year than the rest of the year. If the way 2023 went is any indication of how it will play out this fall, then please take pity on us, because gaming journalists are going to explode over this.

A number of games this year have pleasantly surprised with their quality and it is quite possible that this trend will continue in the coming months. Personally, I’m waiting for such Banishers more than anything in the world – and at the same time, it seems to me that “almost no one knows” about this game. Quite stylishly, the season kicks off with an imaginary brawl between two theoretical candidates for RPG of the year: Starfield for Xbox (and PC) and Baldur’s Gate 3 for PS5.

In the end, I didn’t go to Cologne like the others this year and stayed at home with cat distemper. Together we managed two works, one of which is simply massive, and I have not managed to finish it yet. This is the last published part of Assassin’s Creed from the environment of the Vikings, which I avoided precisely because of the nervousness of the huge map, the number of tasks and warning reviews. You are not very wrong. I still have a third, but it is already clear to me that Valhalla is not up to me. Muddy England with occasional Roman ruins, unforgettable characters, a loose story with no clear purpose, and as a bonus a protagonist who has great design and voice, but most of the game follows the rest like an obedient dog. If the October episode of Mirage is to be a lesson in Valhalla, or perhaps its opposite, then I’m with him.

Also, I also played the new RPG Atlas Fallen with some good ideas but outdated mechanics and terrible animations. I have a soft spot for smaller AA games and always like to buy new stuff like Spiders or Piranha Bytes. Even in Atlas Fallen I found “my own business” and enjoyed having fun fighting sand monsters or fast surfing in the desert, but as I wrote in the review, there are a few things that I would like to no longer see in the current game production.

September will be a big change for me as I start a new job (but of course I’m still loyal to Zing!). At the same time, the famous third game Baldur’s Gate is coming to the PlayStation, and the cosmic Starfield is coming to the Xbox. It’s clear to me that there’s only time left for one of these giant games, and I’m still thinking… Also, I’d also like to return to Night City in Phantom Liberty, the upcoming DLC for Cyberpunk, which should bring a few expected changes.

While not many games were released in July, there were a few major titles released in August. And I’m going to say up front that I haven’t even tried the biggest of them in the form of Baldur’s Gate 3 because it’s a bit above me in terms of genre. However, several titles still awaited me. I reviewed the excellent strategy game Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew from the German studio Mimimi and continued to finish some pauses, although I did not finish anything other than the second playthrough of the RE4 remake. From the news in August, besides Shadow Gambit, I’ve only tried Immortals of Aveum, which I still surprisingly like, but I’m just at the beginning of the journey.

However, August was mostly about Gamescom, where we went on a big expedition this year and brought a lot of impressions from the presentations and directly from playing some of the expected games. Personally, of course, I enjoyed most of the presentation of the game Alan Wake 2, which took place in the cinema. I also met Remedy creative director Sam Lake there, as well as Alex Battaglia of Digital Foundry, somewhat by accident. A truly great experience, not to mention the game itself looks fantastic.

And what awaits us in September? The start of the fall season will be slow, but I’m a bit lucky that there aren’t many games coming out next month that I’m looking forward to. Starfield beats me in terms of genre though I plan on trying it out for the technical side but other than that I’m practically looking forward to the promising soul song Lies of P.

In my case, August marked Gamescom, where I had the opportunity to go again a year later with other members of the editorial board. While last year still saw a gradual return to normal after the coronavirus pandemic, this year the exhibition is back in full force. The participation of Microsoft was very noticeable, showing games such as STALKER 2: The Heart of Chernobyl and Forza Motorsport at Gamescom. The Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 could be played right on the show floor. Other games included such projects as Black Myth: Wukong, The Crew Motorfest, Mortal Kombat 1, Playday 3, Armored Core VI: Fires Of Rubicon and many others. saw many others. Overall, it was a very decent year, to my complete satisfaction, the only thing missing was the participation of PlayStation and Electronic Arts.

If you look at the September game offer, you can see that the main season is in full swing. The most anticipated game is undoubtedly Starfield. However, the sci-fi RPG from Bethesda will be complemented by the soul game Lies of P or the cooperative action game Payday 3. In addition to these games, I personally also look forward to the aforementioned arcade racing The Crew Motorfest and football from Electronic Arta with the new name EA Sports FC 24.

August has become one of the busiest months of the year, at least in my eyes. There were so many games and so little time. The most time I spent without a doubt was Baldur’s Gate 3, which I finally left after over a hundred hours to devote myself to expeditions to other worlds, as well as mowing down monsters in dark 2D settings. After the hectic Gamescom, I also found time for strategies. So I have to say for myself that it was a decent performance.

But September is already literally knocking on the door, so there will most likely not be time for any significant rest. Again, it looks like the month won’t be one of those boring ones. What attracted me the most this time? Probably Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, because I’m already looking forward to returning to a game I’ve written about in the past about why it doesn’t deserve Game of the Year. I am also very tempted by Lies of P, Payday 3 or Gloomhaven. And then, of course, the first Gothic and Boulanchi appear, which I also do not despise. In short, again there is something to look forward to.

In the first half of August, I was able to rewatch the epic musical Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical, which captivated me with everything from the superbly chosen characters to the plot and the singing itself. Details can be found in the text.

Similarly, I finished the second episode of Telltale and Deck Nine’s The Expanse, which continued the moderate pace set at the beginning, but introduced longer playtime, dynamic transition, and interesting character development. By the time you read these words, I’m probably already on episode three. The remaining parts and the final evaluation of the game will be available at the end of September. As part of Remembering Telltale, I also edited the first episode of The Walking Dead at the turn of July and August.

In the coming days, I’m certainly going to launch Starfield, but I don’t know yet whether to go for the comfort of the Xbox environment or go for the frame rate on PC. I’m also interested in other games – with any luck, I might be able to delve into cyberpunk with the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC, which I played once shortly after release.
