Gamescom 2023: Persona 3 Reload Experience

Fans of the Persona series will be thrilled in the coming months as apart from the spin-off Persona 5 Tactica (impressions here), they can look forward to a remake of the very popular third installment. It was originally released in 2006, still for the PlayStation 2. A FES version for PS3 followed a year later, and a handheld version for PSP two years later. In January of this year, the game was released on all modern platforms, but the developers did not stop there, because Atlus is also creating a full-fledged remake.

I got to try it out at the Sega booth at Gamescom, where, as expected, there was a lot of interest in it. However, the demo was only about 15 minutes long and took place in one of the dungeons where you and your group explore rooms, fight enemies, and climb a tower.

Unfortunately, its environment is very monotonous and definitely deserves more attention, however the quality of the graphics page is of course on a completely different level than in the original game. Of course, it’s still a cross-generational game, and it’s far from the kind of visual that could do any work for today’s consoles, but I think it’s good enough for this kind of genre. The game looks very nice, and while it’s mostly based on the 7-year-old five, it goes a little further in the details. At the same time, you can expect a very clear user interface and great animations.

In terms of gameplay, this is truly an A-list in almost every way, so if you’ve played it, you probably know what to expect. Combat is fun and you have a lot of options, both classic attacks and using Personas themselves. Of course, all this is only one part of the whole game, there is another, “social” part, which takes place in the school and its environs. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try it here.

In any case, as in the spin-off Tactica, the sound system should be highlighted. The remake has brand new English dubs and from what I hear they did a very good job. This is very important in such a game, because you will hear their voices very often. And, of course, there is also a great soundtrack, which is based on the original, but supplemented with new songs. The person simply would not be without wonderful songs.

Due to the limited amount of content, it’s still difficult for me to rate Persona 3 Reload, but I think it will live up to the expectations of the fans. Atlus could definitely go further with the remake, but it still offers enough improvements to make the game accessible to modern audiences. The game will be released on February 2 next year on PC, old and new consoles.
