Microsoft permanently halts production of Kinect device – INDIA

You all probably remember the days when you and your friends played outdoor games like Just Dance at home on Xbox consoles and Microsoft Kinect devices. However, the new generation of game consoles from the Redmond giant does not support any of the Kinects – the last consoles to support these devices were the Xbox One X and Xbox One S. Now Microsoft has announced final end of Kinect.

If you have been interested in what is happening in the console world for a long time, then this statement may shock you a little. Company discontinued Kinect for Xbox in 2017. However, two years later, the original idea was revived, but for a completely different target group. With devices Microsoft Azure Kinect Developer Kit intended for use in companies.

At the same time, it was a much more advanced product than those sold to players to connect to the Xbox. Azure Kinect introduced 12 MP camera, seven microphones and ToF sensor. This is used to measure the distance between the camera and the object for each point in the image. For this, light rays or ultrasound are used.

While Microsoft is ending production of its own Kinect devices, intends to offer its technologies to other companies – in much the same way that Google once did with Stadia before they completely buried the cloud service. Microsoft says it’s important to keep Kinect gadgets available in the ecosystem, and the blog post mentions a strong partnership with companies like Analog Devices.

“As the needs of our customers and partners evolve, we regularly update our products to best support them. From time to time this includes the introduction of new features as well as the discontinuation of products. We have decided to discontinue the Azure Kinect Developer Kit, but this is far from the end of the technology as it will continue to be available through our partner ecosystem.” explains Microsoft.

In conclusion, Microsoft’s message thanks the community for their support and feedback over the past few years.
