One of the largest retail chains in the UK is responding to the growing demand for digital versions of games by stopping the sale of physical versions. Tesco will stop selling boxed games after running out of current stock at over 2,800 stores in the UK.
The reason for this decision is the tendency of buyers to digital versions. Those in the UK do i for individual games more than 80% of sales. For example, the latest releases of Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16, Street Fighter 6 and F1 2023 were selling at less than 18% in regular stores. According to the GAME store, digital sales account for 75% of the market.. At the same time, before the pandemic, it was 45%.
Tesco’s changes were expected as the network was selling “new” games for as little as £5. Deathloop and Call of Duty Vanguard, for example, had this price. It also previously had big discounts on Nintendo Switch and Xbox hardware.
Instead of boxed games, Tesco wants to focus on sale of prepaid cards to purchase digital content from PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and Nintendo eShop.
At this time, we do not know what impact the British Tesco decision will have on other branches, including the branch in the Czech Republic.
