Nvidia Introduces RTX IO Technology With GPU Decompression

Along with the release of new drivers and the RTX 4060 Ti graphics card with 16 GB of VRAM, today Nvidia also introduced a new technology in the form of RTX IO. This allows for much better use of fast SSDs, which are held back by lack of optimization on the PC.

Thanks to RTX IO, textures don’t have to go through the demanding CPU decompression process, but can be sent directly to VRAM, where the GPU takes care of the decompression, which offloads the CPU significantly. For less powerful cards, Nvidia reports up to 5x faster texture loading than without RTX IO, which should prevent annoying texture bouncing. At the same time, he mentions that the technology can significantly reduce game files, namely by 44%. RTX IO is based on the open standard GDeflate, which supports Microsoft DirectStorage technology in DirectX games, but also works in Vulkan.

Today we saw the first implementation in the recently announced and immediately released Portal: Prelude RTX. This is a remaster of the popular modification for the original Portal, which is based on the RTX Remix platform. In addition to RTX IO, it also provides a path tracing implementation (full ray tracing), just like Portal RTX released last year.

You won’t have to wait long for the next game either. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is coming to PC next Wednesday using DirectStorage. Much of the game’s design is built around fast loading, so this will be a great test of new technology.
