However, most of them were not very successful, which is why the developers from Frontier Developments are now trying to change their RTS Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin. A few days ago, a beta version of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin was available that I couldn’t ignore, so I ended up going to the Animal Realm, also known as Gur, like many other players. It became the scene of clashes between two of the four races available in the future. On the one hand, the civilized followers of the god Sigmar went into battle, and on the other, a group of dirty Orruk kruleboys. It would be difficult to see more different factions in this universe, and their scale is not exactly small.

The idea of ​​Sigmar is embodied here through armored warriors of various forms and specializations. Some carry crossbows, while others carry heavy equipment, shields, and massive hammers at hand that their enemies can’t collide with under almost any circumstances. The imaginary icing on the cake is the dragon rider. Orruks have neither dragons nor horse-drawn drafts at their disposal. They rely on cunning and brute force, using shamans, archers armed with crossbows, and unusually troll-like troggoths whose blows can crush any armor.

The factions in Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin do not have units that differ only in characteristics and appearance. They also bring certain abilities into combat that you have to work with in battles. When you give them up, you automatically lose most of your power. For example, these Annihilators are a strong bunch that can last for a long time, but once you want to use their full potential, you need to use their lunge ability in combat, in which they run into enemy lines and make meatballs. of them. Focusing on unique skills is not a bad direction at all, but it takes some getting used to.

Gur – the place where death awaits

Each faction enters an unstoppable battlefield through magical gates that serve as a place from which you gain new powers. Construction is present here only to a very limited extent. The only thing that can be done is to improve the base and form fortifications at strategic points where magic flows from. They, like winning positions, must be held in case of striving for victory. I have found that the size of the maps where collisions occur is relatively limited. They reminded me very much of the MOBA format, but this is primarily due to the fact that only a part of the assortment offered in the future is available so far.

I tested a lot while playing Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin, which ultimately led to the impression that one of the weaknesses of this project may be balance. While it was easy for one faction to destroy enemies, it was difficult for rivals to break through the plates of their heavy ones. However, as it happens, it is possible that we will still see the correct optimization and adjustment of statistics.

If there’s anything that worries me about this job other than balance, it’s the DLC policy of the developers at Frontier Developments. In the long run, this company produces a disproportionate amount of add-on packages that usually cannot justify its price. If the studio decided to go down a different path than their other projects, I probably wouldn’t be angry. However, only time will tell the reality.

The potential of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin cannot be denied

The Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin beta showcases only a fraction of the content we’ll get after release. However, already now we can say that this is a strategy with a decent potential to bet on the pace and differentiation of the races fighting for dominance over Gur. The currently introduced groupings are interesting, but I’m not sure if they are well balanced. However, there is still a long time before the release, so I expect this factor to be further optimized. In theory, the possibility of failure could be afforded by Frontier Developments’ rather aggressive DLC policy and campaign, but for that, I’m hoping to port over as much content as possible from the Black Library, which offers no bad stories at all. Let’s see how things play out in October when the full version of this real-time strategy game arrives on PC and consoles.
