However, in the Battle of Rome board game, nations are not pitted against each other to take over this famous city, but outstanding men and women are trying to create the most profitable province. Quantity betting may not pay off in the Battle of Rome
At the start, each player has a stack of shuffled card pieces in front of them. Of these, as part of his tour, he will take five works representing vineyards, orchards, fields, city districts and quarries. Then you build the buildings that are on the map you have taken on the territory that you have laid out. The order, even which buildings you put up, is clearly defined, so there is not much room for creativity. However, the map itself is never exactly the same, so you will always place the buildings on the palette in a different order in each game.
As soon as you have five pieces in your hand, on which a piece of buildings stands, the Separation phase begins. In it, you create a large and small pile behind the shelter you own, which you offer to your neighbors. How many parts of the landscape you place on one side or the other is up to you. The only limit is your own creativity. You can easily put all the pieces on a large pile or split the stacks evenly. However, there should be a diamond in the smaller literally under any circumstances. Thus, the player who reaches for it will not get as much space, but can count on certain points. For example, if you don’t lose any diamonds during the game and instead get four, you can expect to get 31 points for gems alone, which could easily lead you to victory with some territory acquisition.
While diamonds are a safe investment to some extent, you definitely can’t bet on them if you want to win while playing Battle of Rome. On the other hand, the bet on the development of the territory can pay off as efficiently as possible. You also get victory points for how well you connect parts of your province, which you gradually expand with other parts. The rate of expansion determines whether you’re reaching for larger stacks or, conversely, those that don’t contain as many pieces but offer diamonds instead.
Building territories requires some thought when playing Battle for Rome.
Scoring in the Battle of Rome is based on fairly strict rules. You only get points if you are actively working with the territory available to you, which in practice means that, for example, olive groves you only get points if there is an oil press on or near them. But as soon as the press is built, for example, in the middle of vineyards and in no way adjacent to areas ideal for growing olives, you get exactly zero, because there is simply nothing to generate. But if you have, for example, two amphitheaters that are adjacent to each other and both occupy a space made up of seven parts in a certain way, you get seven points for each of them. It is always very important to design your territories in such a way that you get the maximum benefit from them.
As mentioned a few paragraphs ago, the building itself is a given in the Battle of Rome, so sometimes you have to sweat a lot when combining individual parts. All you have to do is build a building on a bad surface and you will immediately enjoy it. While in other games the fight for the winning position is tough, here it is determined by the amount of points created by the sum of points for diamonds and the best connected buildings. In the event of a tie between players, both win.
Little players will love Battle for Rome.
In terms of focus, Battle for Rome is definitely not for players looking for a challenge. There are no fights. Actually, within the framework of game mechanics, it corresponds to the recommended age. It is mainly intended for the younger age groups and the less experienced, for whom it can be an introductory title in the field of strategy. If you like more complex things, I’ll probably choose something else.
