It’s been a Friday since Blizzard Entertainment decided to leave China for World of Warcraft. Some did not like this action, which led to a lawsuit. However, the source is not Shanghai NetEase Network Technology Development Co. Ltd. as most expected, but dissatisfied “gamer” Jang Jun, who, according to Chinese media, is suing Blizzard Entertainment and The9 alone.
According to available information, this is not his first rodeo. He has sued NetEase and The9 in the past between 2009, 2010 and 2019. His most recent lawsuit stemmed from a request for a refund of $288.90 of World of Warcraft game time, which, of course, was quickly dismissed.
And it was one of his last $43.5 million lawsuits that was to be the basis of the misunderstanding that put NetEase in the role of interim plaintiff against Blizzard Entertainment. It is still not clear what actually caused the whole situation, but it is clear that a small mistake caused a huge wave thanks to the presence of NetEase. This was later corrected, but given how much information had spread in the public space, it was practically too late for a more substantial correction.
This can be seen, for example, in the reaction of Blizzard: “To date, Blizzard has not received any lawsuits, but we believe that we have not violated any license agreements. The terms that NetEase is suspected to be unhappy with include standard industry practice and have been mutually beneficial for both parties over the years. While we are disappointed and bewildered by these ongoing activities, it is important to note that our nearly twenty years of history in China has been very positive and enjoyable, and we remain committed to serving and protecting the rights of our local players. Moreover, it is very likely that, like Mr. Jun’s previous request, this one will also be rejected. We will keep you informed about the progress of the case.
Following the news that NetEase was suing Blizzard Entertainment for $43.5 million in damages, Activision Blizzard responded by saying there were no complaints. We have since learned that NetEase is not suing Blizzard at all, but a disgruntled player. https://t.co/wVwNzie8wk pic.twitter.com/DLYJOVQ17n
