Sega confirmed the proposed purchase of the company Rovio Entertainmentwhose biggest success is undoubtedly the predominantly mobile series Wicked Birds. The deal should be closed by the end of September, and the price tag will drop from an estimated billion dollars to 775 million.
With the purchase of the Finnish team, Sega wants to strengthen its mobile division and thus complement the Sonic games in particular. The publisher expects the mobile gaming market to grow by 56% by 2026 and believes that “Rovio’s exceptional mobile gaming know-how will help bring Sega’s current and new titles into the global mobile gaming market, where there is great potential and several users”.
Rovio, on the other hand, needs to go beyond mobile devices and release games on other platforms with the help of Sega. Other common goals for both companies lie on the silver screen, with both Sonic and Angry Birds having film adaptations under their belts.
Rovio joins the group Sega Europe and add as needed creative Assembly (Total War series, Alien: Isolation) or Relic Entertainment (Age of Empires IV series, Company of Heroes)
