Path tracing is a technology that has been around for quite some time, but until recently it was almost unthinkable to run it in real time. This has changed with various remasters of older games such as last year’s Portal RTX, but now there is the first new AAA game to feature this technology. This, of course, is about Cyberpunk 2077, whose Ray Tracing: Overdrive mode will appear in the game on Tuesday, April 11th. However, even before the release, Digital Foundry editors were able to test the novelty, which also led to a video comparison.
We write about Path Tracing in more detail, for example, in this article, and in simple terms, this is a full-fledged implementation of Ray Tracing. While the hybrid RT that was previously included in Cyberpunk was only used for single things like shadows and reflections, path tracing takes care of direct and indirect lighting of the entire environment. Thanks to this, the general lighting has become much more natural, and all light sources cast shadows, which was almost unthinkable before. I think the images speak for themselves, I definitely recommend watching the video.
Of course, the performance is not perfect, on the most powerful RTX 4090 graphics card at the moment, the game runs at around 18 FPS in native 4K. However, DF’s Alex Battaglia adds that enabling DLSS upscaling in performance mode will get you a coveted 60fps, and through image generation, around 95fps. Thanks to these two technologies, even players with less powerful cards could get a chance, especially at lower resolutions. However, it is still worth remembering that even according to the developers, this is just a technological preview – a sample of what path tracing can do. The authors expect that RT: Overdrive will probably not be used by most people. But in a few years it will be completely different.
This update is truly amazing. In many ways, this is the most technically impressive game you can play right now. Path tracking is the future… but we’re still at the very beginning of the journey. https://t.co/6xvILUkeQG pic.twitter.com/Nc31QtE6cK
