Big comparison of DLSS and FSR scaling technologies

PC scaling technologies have become widespread in recent years. It soon became clear that they often achieved quality similar to the original resolution, and in some respects even better. Apart from third-party technologies, we have 3 main ones directly from graphics card manufacturers: DLSS from Nvidia, FSR from AMD and XeSS from Intel. The first two named are by far the most common and are the focus of the Hardware Unboxed YouTube channel, which tested both DLSS and FSR in 26 games at 4K and 1440p resolutions in Quality and Performance modes. The version found in the game files was always used, but in theory you can replace it with a newer one, it’s not too difficult a process. It should also be said that in the case of DLSS, only upscaling was tested, and not image generation, which is a different technology.

For a real comparison of images, I recommend watching the video, here I would like to present at least a conclusion, which is certainly interesting. It turned out that FSR is no better than DLSS in any game (in any of the modes and resolutions). There has been a tie in a number of cases where both technologies offered the same image quality or a similar level of problems. This is the case, for example, with the Dead Space remake, where DLSS causes visible ghosting and FSR causes flickering. However, in 92% of cases, DLSS was better than FSR to a greater or lesser extent. As a general rule, the lower the render resolution, the greater the benefit of DLSS. At 1440p and Performance mode, the FSR is practically useless in most games.

This is definitely a big plus for Nvidia and their latest generation graphics cards, which are the only ones that support DLSS (starting with RTX 20 in particular) while FSR works with different graphics. AMD often has the edge in video memory capacity, while Nvidia boasts better scaling and ray tracing performance.

What is more important to you and which of these factors influences you the most when buying a graphics card?
