Nintendo fix “drifting” drivers Joy-Con in most European countries free of charge even after the warranty period has expired. This is reported on the updated support pages. Up until now, Nintendo has been heavily criticized because it often charged tens of euros to fix a known bug or players had to buy new controllers for around 70 euros.
The fixes will be available in the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland and the UK. It was the organizations that drew attention to Nintendo’s approach to repairing and replacing the Joy-Con. At the end of last year, the consumer association published Which? a survey that identified dust and mechanical damage as the main cause of the skid. Both are related to driver defects. Following this, Nintendo demanded a free repair or replacement of the Joy-Cons.
The offer of free post-warranty repairs is not limited in time, but players must meet several conditions: the sticks on their controller must not start to “drift” due to accidental damage, and Joy-Cons must not be modified by counterfeit means.
Nintendo isn’t the only company struggling with unwanted analog stick motion detection on its controller. Even the DualSense or the Xbox controller is not without problems.
