A new Subnautica game is on the way

The Subnautica series is a hit among gamers and streamers alike for its challenging survival mechanics and engaging story that becomes less obvious in less than obvious terms as you progress. Now developer Unknown Worlds is recruiting for the next installment in the Subnautica series.

According to a job posting on the Unknown Worlds website, the developer is looking for a senior narrative designer to “join the team working on the next game in the Subnautica universe.” This is not only confirmation that a new Subnautica game is already in development, but the post also gives us some clues as to what kind of game it will be.

“This person will work closely with the team to tell engaging and dramatic stories within the context of the game experience,” the post continues. “Also in describing the history and knowledge of a new science fiction world and its extraterrestrial inhabitants.” It looks like the new game will be more story-driven and set in an entirely new world, and the presence of alien lifeforms will continue to be a big part of the game.

The post also states that the new recruit will help “create information, story, characters, and stories” as well as “write dialogue and background text.” All of this indicates that Subnautica’s next game is more complete and rich in story than previous outings, and the story becomes a backseat for survival.

We won’t be seeing the new Subnautica game anytime soon, as the post clearly states that the game is still in its infancy and we still don’t know what platforms it will be on.

Subnautica and Subnautica Under Zero are coming to Game Pass, so it’s likely we’ll also see Subnautica 3 on Game Pass at some point, and possibly on the service at launch.
