Last year, Electronic Arts made a net profit of approx. $7 billion and gross profit was over $5 billion, up 18% from the previous year. However, CEO Andrew Wilson announced layoffs.

The publishing giant behind games like The Sims, Apex Legends, FIFA or Madden will lay off about 6% of its global workforce. This from 700 to 800 people. The company hopes that more employees will move to other positions within the company. The relocation and layoff process is expected to be completed by the end of September, and all those laid off are eligible for severance pay and other assistance, including other forms of benefits. EA estimates they will spend between $170 million and $200 million on everything.

According to the CEO, the company has reviewed upcoming projects and restructured some teams. They want each other in society focus more on their biggest brands and build large communities around them by engaging these players with social and creative tools and bring interactive story blockbusters. Wilson had to write to employees that they were leaving projects that did not contribute to this strategy.

Perhaps EA understands that players need not only large-scale games, but also stories for a single game. I think the Dead Space remake sparked their interest. Its creators are currently working on an action adventure with Iron Man. Two more as-yet-unknown Marvel-licensed games are in development. Also Dragon Age: Dreadwolf from BioWare, new Mass Effect, new The Sims, new football without a FIFA license, WRC from Codemasters or the return of Skate.

EA will of course have more, including a new NHL, F1, etc. The upcoming ones are EA Sports PGA Tour (4/7 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S) and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor ( 4/28). 2023 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S).

Other big companies have already quit this year, namely Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon/Twitch, ByteDance, and Unity.
