We’ve written about the new Metahuman Animator feature before, but Epic revealed a lot more at the State of Unreal conference. One of the notable innovations is Unreal Engine 5.2, another big step forward from last year’s 5.1 release. You can see for yourself in the attached video, where we see the Rivian R1T driving through the countryside. It is really detailed and the creators of the engine highlight, for example, advanced physics.
However, there are two major additions to version 5.2. Firstly, it is the Substrate technology, which provides more advanced processing of materials and layers.
However, the most interesting innovation is the so-called PCG – Procedural Content Generation. This is a tool that allows developers to greatly expand the game world through procedural generation, manually creating only the base. The individual parameters can of course be adjusted so that you can adapt the result to your own image. So this should greatly speed up the whole process of creating the environment, but not completely replace manual work.
Unreal Engine 5.2 is now available in preview.
