For some time there have been rumors that Sony is developing a new model of the PlayStation 5 console, which could be released this year. However, this should only be a minor refinement that will be cheaper to manufacture and offer a removable mechanism. Insider Gaming magazine, the same source that also reported on the PS5 review, now claims another new model is in the works.

This was announced by well-known insider Tom Henderson, according to which Sony is already working on the PlayStation 5 Pro. But he hasn’t found any performance details yet. In general, a stronger graphics chip and, above all, performance in ray tracing is expected, which is not quite ideal for the base model. But whether Sony plans to use RDNA 3 GPUs or just some improved version of the existing RDNA 2 is still unclear. It will also offer the use of a newer processor architecture, the PS5 already has the excellent Zen 2. On the other hand, it will be important to balance the new console so that it is still available at a normal price.

The Pro console could be released in late 2024, Henderson said, but of course the release window is still subject to change. It will essentially be a current-gen device, as the PlayStation 6 is not expected until 2028 at the earliest.
