Team Ninja is one of those studios that you just know about as the master of hardcore hack and slash games. But after Ninja Gaiden ran from 2004 to 2012, they started experimenting with action-RPG elements, giving rise to the Nioh series, which somewhat eclipsed the better-known Souls series, but still won the hearts of many players, mainly due to its faster action. The latest work of this studio called Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty further differentiates the game from other games in this genre. morale system and reworked stamina. This is a very fresh experience that creates the perfect gameplay with its mechanics even for those who are not usually into Chinese myths and legends.

The action takes place during the Three Kingdoms period in China. More precisely, 184, when there was a big attack of yellow turbans. AND here the game is already separated from reality and adds elements of dark fantasy. Along with this attack, magic also penetrated the earth, reviving the dead, controlling supernatural beings, or capable of disfiguring powerful warriors. Your hero finds himself in the middle of a conflict when he accidentally survives an attack on his village. That is, he is killed and without explanation returns to life to take revenge.

You may not have guessed it from the title, but the story makes a lot of sense here. The demos here are very frequent and depict breathtaking fights in which your character performs combinations of attacks that you would have a hard time pulling off on your own. If you meet someone in a movie, you can bet that such a character could join you. Although the game offers online co-op play, so you’ll always have someone on hand, even if you’re playing alone, which will save your neck here and there. That is, unless they automatically collide with a noticeably stronger creature, which will then pursue you throughout the location. They themselves pretty linear but you can go back to them. It’s just that most of the time it won’t be needed and you will more or less jump from task to task. Personally, I only returned to the mountain village where the blacksmith lives. You can stay with her upgrade both armor and weapons. Armor is divided into three weight categories, while the game has a dozen types of weapons. Most types have both one-handed and two-handed variants. He will choose a lover of large axes, as well as two-handed swords or spears. At the same time, the village also has several side quests with good rewards. But even if the locations are linear and not too interconnected, here and there You can turn off the main line and engage in activities such as secondary boss fights, finding the best gear, or unique enemies that drop great rewards. But the best feature of locations is their verticality. You can jump on enemies and deal heavy damage, or you can easily flank them and take them out one by one. Yes, you can throw yourself into combat, but thanks to these more open locations in the lane levels, I was able to get through the entire chapter quite quickly. Basically, I chose a boss with high morale, so that he did not look like an unscrupulous opponent.

The morale system is one of the main drivers of the game. Each chapter levels up completely from scratch. The more enemies you defeat, the faster your morale grows. But if you get hit or die, your morale will drop quickly. The level then serves to indicate the strength of the enemies, similar to what you know from other games. If your morale is level 10 like your opponent, the fight should be even. But if his level is noticeably higher, he will deal more damage to you, and you to him less. If you surprise him with an attack from behind, or if you manage to paralyze him in a duel, you will capture part of his level. The game seems to be trying to get you to explore the locations., kill weaker individuals and only then attack stronger ones. Bosses usually hover around a certain level. So, if you manage to get through the locations correctly without any problems, you can easily finish the chapter with a higher level than them. The boss is not such a problem if you are careful enough. In my opinion, this is a nice and intuitive way to reward players for an easy grind.

You can also increase morale, for example by capturing a territory. Instead of the usual fire pits, there are two types of flags. Battle flags are used for recreation, travel, or character enhancement. Marker flags only heal you when activated, and increase both your morale and the maximum morale you can drop to upon death. Most of these flags are located away from the main roads., so research will bring you additional problems, but your morale will rise even after death. I liked that the game forces the player to take risks, which I have always lacked in “soul-like” games.

It’s a nice change to some extent. lack of stamina. you have under your life Spirometer. Once you defend a lot, dodge a lot, or attack a lot, it will grow to your left. After that, you will not be able to quickly dodge, but you will be able to attack slowly. But once you land a successful attack, it will start to drop and switch straight to blue values, allowing you to use a strong attack enhanced by the spirit. The attack is not only stronger, but also increases the enemy’s Spirit. If it is subsequently filled, you will be able to land a relatively strong hit with a special attack.

But how to dodge effectively when you have a negative Spirit? That’s where it comes into play A reflection that Sekira players will be very familiar with.. With just one press of the dodge button and lateral direction, you can easily dodge and deflect the enemy’s attack to the side. This temporarily paralyzes him so you can attack immediately. At the same time, in this way you can also deflect Spirit attacks from enemies that otherwise could not be easily blocked. This is especially useful in boss fights where you can temporarily cut off parts of their bodies. But the Spirit is used not only to use stronger attacks, but also when using spells.

Because spells are spirit bound, you won’t find anything like mana in the game. Combat as such is more focused on faster attacks on the enemy. With each strike you get closer not only to defeating the enemy, but also to the ability to use effective spells. You unlock them by leveling up your character. All attributes are divided into the so-called “five phases” – fire, earth, water, wood and metal. Each phase combines several well-known characteristics. For example, a tree combines hit points, agility, and support spells. New ones become available as you level up, up to four active ones, even if they are at a different stage. But you can still use tree phase spells because they’re not just support oriented. In addition to the classic healing, you also have electrical attacks.

Then there’s the ultimate, a spell that allows you to summon mythical creatures. Like spells, they are tied to one of five phases. But unlike spells, they don’t need to reach a certain level. They are just a little more efficient. Mythical creatures most often have two options – offensive and auxiliary. For example, you can use the strange Chinese horse to plant powerful stalactites on the battlefield or temporarily boost your stats.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty has an excellent combat system., combines dynamic hack and slash and a sophisticated role-playing system, as well as hardcore! Basically the ability to flank enemies combined with the morale system makes you use the environment to your advantage. In all of the above, the game is excellent, but not without significant technical errors.

The game has two graphics modes – focusing on frames per second, then resolution. We played the game on PlayStation 5. In resolution mode, the game runs in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. In FPS-based performance mode, the game ran at up to 60 frames, but the resolution was adjusted dynamically. However, images dropped below the 60fps mark in some places. Which can be frustrating for players looking for 100% control and responsiveness. I hope that in the future the game will have more modes like Nioh 2 on next generation consoles where you can hit the 120fps mark. However, there are no significant differences between the modes in terms of graphics. In both cases, the game sometimes has problems loading textures both at a distance and sometimes close to the player.

I see this as the biggest technical problem the need to be constantly connected to the Internet. At least before release, the game had serious issues where it disconnected from the servers even when I had a stable connection on the console. If so you will experience several times in a row in the middle of a fight, interrupted by the message that the connection was lost… you can get away with it once, but not four times in a row. Without a doubt, this is a bug that can be fixed with updates. However, be prepared for the fact that for the time being the game requires the Internet. The good thing is that I rarely ran into problems in the later stages of the game, so this may have been a bug in our review version.

Otherwise visually it is a breathtaking sight. Graphically, it’s definitely not the best in the genre, but many of the locations complement the game very well. As soon as you find yourself in the center of the yellow turbans, everything is darkened and saturated with dark magic. On the other hand, the game can be very colorful and even fabulous in some locations. Each location is complemented by a brilliant soundtrack heavily inspired by oriental folklore. However, you will notice this most in samples with English, Chinese or Japanese dubbing. Lip sync was done for the Chinese dub only.so don’t be surprised if something doesn’t suit you when it comes to English.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is not so much a spiritual successor to Nioh as it is a notable development. The combat system is still fast, but more focused on repelling attacks. The addition of morale suddenly makes you explore the environment more and look for workarounds around enemies so you can attack from behind. You can easily beat the game, but you will like this one 40 hours of experience until you no longer consider enemy levels and weaknesses. Apart from a few technical errors, this is a great hardcore action RPG that I recommend not only to fans of this genre. The game uses more linear locations to focus more on gameplay elements. And to be honest, I never expected to enjoy going back to the “grind” that I didn’t even realize. This is a sign that the game has been well developed.

Verdict

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a notable evolution of Nioh. The combat system is still fast and focused on repelling attacks. Apart from a few technical errors, this is a great hardcore action RPG that I recommend not only to fans of this genre to try. The game is really well designed, especially the morale system.
