Turn-based strategies are very common these days. Quite a few are built on a format that directly punishes you for failure. However, few have the visuals to make them stand out, or a rich enough variety of warriors to be reckoned with in combat. Tahovka Inkulinati is already impressive with its Early Access appearance on PC, but whether it offers more than Pentiment-like graphics will tell our impressions.
In Inculinati you remember your youth
Medieval manuscripts continue to attract attention not only for the way they are written, but also for the illustrations of the pages, which often complement narratives describing historical moments, chivalric legends, or countless other elements of the life of the era of knights. . Few people have managed to present a turn-based strategy in such a visual format so far. However, the developers from Yaza Games decided to create a turn-based strategy Inkulinati in it, in which, just like in the excellent adventure game Pentiment, you will become a master of the pen.
But this time around, you won’t be wandering through historical acts, but more or less sitting still and generating magical images that will rival the creations of your opponents. For myself, I would compare this format to what most of us did in our younger years, when computers were rare, figures were always in short supply, and the most popular battlefield where the knights of Camelot clashed was white paper. It quickly filled up with drawings of dragons, archers, and other warriors fighting for this or that little artist. 2D battlefields are waiting for you in Inkulinati, which you can now enjoy in local battles or in a rogue campaign.
At the very beginning of each campaign, you create a hero. Classically, you define its appearance to a certain degree, after which you have the option to assign it a special ability related to the card or the creatures themselves. Some characters can gain, for example, a skill that gives them ink every time their favorite creatures die, which serve as raw materials for creating new servants. But back to the work of the painter. Another thing you define is what the drawing hand can do while playing. Yes, you read it right. He intervenes in the struggle not only with the brush with which he creates images, but also by moving those already created by the hand, or by healing those chosen by him. There are many options and some are more interesting than others.
However, Prim ends up playing for the army’s choice. So, in a few hours you will be able to play more with this element, initially only two versions are available to you. In one, the infantry consists of rabbits, and in the other, a format is proposed in which a pack of dogs is similarly armed. Over time, you get more interesting options that not only have better stats, but also bring an extra special attack into the fight. Personally, I liked first of all a strong-looking warrior with two hands, capable of inflicting a lot of damage to everyone around. The range of characters in my opinion is sufficient, so there is plenty to choose from.
You should look at the wiggle room here
When you decide to attack, its outcome is determined not by dice or pure chance, but by a wheel of fortune that you can stop at any time. The format of the battlefield itself is not bad, where your drawn characters collide. Most of them can be maneuvered relatively decently, but sometimes you’ll run into not-so-well-decided battlefields, so it’s very easy to get stuck on them when neither side can advance. Or rather, she refuses to take the first step, because this will automatically lead to the beginning of her defeat.
Fortunately, such situations are solved by the format of a slowly changing ice rink. As if the creators knew that the parties would not always be engaged in each other enthusiastically, after a while, various factors appear on the scene that cause the enemies to get closer. One of the many such elements is, for example, hellfires, which turn the edges of the field into a death trap in which one really does not want to stay. For some players, this concept of battlefields can be a real problem. I must say that often your tactical options are very limited.
But you should always keep an eye on the stock of ink that appears on the map after the death of images or when moving between chapters, which are actually an alternative to classic moves. Working with the black liquid is essential to success. You can save it in combat, but no one stops you from spending it in one round. However, the number of characters is limited. Therefore, it is always a good idea to choose carefully who you put on the battlefield and who will wait in reserve, because it is this choice that often determines how the whole encounter will turn out.
The Inculinati Early Access disc doesn’t really need it.
Inculinati is already in early access – an interesting turn-based rogue-like title that is not afraid to put players in tactical battles that are not as easy to complete as it might seem at first glance. On the contrary, I would say that it can be quite frustrating at times, but if you really immerse yourself in the game, you will love this format very quickly, because each victory will be a moment full of euphoria for you, awakening in your mind the desire to rush to the next challenge. A strong factor in this work is undoubtedly the fact that the range of creatures that have the ability to fight on the battlefield is very diverse, so no campaign should be exactly the same.
For many of you, the more limited battlefield may feel like a thorn in your side, but once you get used to it, you already have a decent turn-based strategy that you really won’t get bored of. Honestly, I can’t wait to see what the creators bring us in the coming months, as every bit of content will definitely make a difference for this part. Now excuse me, another attempt is already waiting.
