Wired magazine published an interview with Maria GrigorovichUkrainian studio producer GSC game worldwhich he is currently working on STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl. The developer describes how the studio is coping with the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, revealing that nearly two-thirds of the team has moved to Prague.
GSC developers have been preparing for the worst since early 2022. With increased reports of a possible Russian attack the studio offered employees and their families evacuation to Uzhhorod near the borders with Slovakia and Hungary. This option was used by about two hundred developers, so in total the studio was responsible for the relocation of five hundred people. Part of the team went to Budapest, but one hundred and thirty people from the GSK remained in Ukraine.
“Some people living in the Kyiv region were convinced that Bucha or Irpen would be relatively safe under any circumstances. It’s a miracle that we finally got them to leave, given all the horror that followed.” says Grigorovich and points to the massacres committed by the Russian army in the suburbs of Kyiv.
For his temporary workplace during the war, the Ukrainian studio chose Prague. Interest in it began in March. He is currently working here. two hundred developerswho fled from Ukraine. According to the producer, the location was chosen due to the friendly atmosphere of the local development community and the possibility of renting the premises. The rest of the team members work from home in Ukraine.
“Everyone wants to go home. But some people have nowhere to turn. Every Ukrainian lost something for Russia during this war,” explains Grigorovich. Victims of the war can also be found among the developers from GSC Game World – in December we wrote about death Vladimir Yezhova.
