DualSense Edge Game Experience

We had the opportunity to play for a few hours in the office of the Czech PlayStation representative with the new DualSense Edge controller model for the PlayStation 5 console (it is likely that the controller can be used for other devices such as computers or tablets). . The idea of advanced controllers for more demanding gamers is not new in the gaming market, however there is an important difference if the platform owner decides to build this controller themselves rather than just license it from another company. Sony has approached the creation of this controller with the same precision as the creation of the console itself, and the result is a very good impression.

There is not much to improve in the DualSense controller.

The first impression when you pick up the Edge controller will probably surprise you with how similar it is to a traditional DualSense controller. And not only in terms of appearance, but also when it comes to, for example, weight or material/surface. Considering how different these things are for an “advanced controller” on a competing console, I was really stunned, but it actually makes sense: the DualSense controller from the very beginning, even in its basic version, is one of the best controllers. anything I’ve ever held in my hands – and that’s because of things like surface or weight, even before tactile was enabled for a supported game, which greatly expanded the controller’s capabilities. So there is not much to improve in this regard.

Huge depth of fine tuning (in Czech)

However, under the well-known shape of the Edge hides a number of additional options and settings. As is customary with advanced controllers, there are several additional buttons on the first row – towards you on the bottom of its case there are two (very) tiny “petals” that vaguely resemble go-tokens. They are firmly fixed into the body of the controller, and pressing or holding them has the same firm response as the main “face” button of the controller. Their main purpose is to bring up the controller profile switching menu, where you can easily switch the entire controller settings profile, for example, from racing to shooting or from machine gun to sniper (basically these are different stick deadzone settings). Profiles are, of course, fully customizable.

In addition, you have the option to add two classic paddles or two additional forward buttons to the back of the controller with a simple magnetic contact, so you can then assign them to any button in the game. For example, some players don’t like using the L3 or R3 while pushing the stick into the controller, so the rear paddles may well take over this function. Another very useful feature is the trigger stops, thanks to which you can reduce the distance at which the trigger “fully fires”. In practice, some games turn on after lightly pulling the trigger, without having to press it all the way. It may seem like a small thing, but it is these precious milliseconds that highly professional shooters will appreciate.

While the hardware bonuses are relatively traditional, the software support and customization options are what really take your breath away. The PlayStation 5 console will receive automatic firmware support for this controller. entirely in Czech, which will allow you to open additional menus in the console specifically for the version of the Edge driver. Here you can not only switch the functions of all used buttons, but also change (according to the schedule) the sensitivity and dead zone of analog sticks and triggers for individual game profiles, which in practice means that the stick reacts faster or, on the contrary, does not react unintentionally to a light touch . All these settings together can easily take hours of your time, but the result is a controller that is functionally perfect for your style and preferences for every game and profile.

A simple solution for drifting levers

Drifting analog sticks (voluntarily swerving to the side after years of using the controller) is something that anyone who doesn’t play holiday games has probably encountered. One bonus of the DualSense Edge is also the ultimate solution to this problem in the form of very easily removable analog sticks, where once the fuse is released, you can slide the entire joystick, including the sensing mechanism, out of the controller case to then insert a new stick into it. It may not sound like much of a “solution”, but it’s definitely a much better option than having to throw away or claim the entire controller.

A replacement “stick module” is available in Czech stores for 599 CZK, which is definitely a better price than buying a new controller. While, of course, I would prefer that game controller sticks never drift at all, this is simply a design issue that virtually all manufacturers struggle with. This is the most elegant solution I have seen so far. By the way, the Edge controller also comes with spare pads for the top of the sticks, so you can customize their shape and surface to your liking.

Stylish packaging with accessories

As “Professional Brand Equipment for Demanding Users”, the DualSense Edge comes in a stylish original case that not only perfectly protects the controller during transport, but also hides all its replacement and additional components. In particular, you will find:

  • DualSense Edge Wireless Controller
  • Braided USB cable
  • 2 standard plugs
  • 2 high round ends
  • 2 low round ends
  • 2 low round buttons at the back
  • 2 lever buttons on the back
  • connector housing

The housing is designed in such a way that it is possible to connect the controller to the power cable through it without opening the housing. By the way, the power cord has the ability to lock the controller so as not to accidentally pull it out / turn it off during the game. In short, this controller is designed specifically for pro gamers for intense competition. But, of course, you can enjoy its comfort even during everyday casual gaming, when you appreciate the additional buttons on the bottom of its body, or the aforementioned final solution to the problem of drifting, for example.

The DualSense Edge controller will be available in the Czech Republic from January 26, 2023 at a price of CZK 5,990.
