They have appeared many times in the past allegedly genuine footage of various military conflicts, which in fact was simply edited and misused footage from Army 3 by Bohemia Interactive. This happened in connection with the conflicts in Afghanistan, Palestine or Syria, so it is probably not surprising that this the current war in Ukraine does not bypass the issue. It’s a rather odd tradition and part of wartime propaganda that now seems to have reached the point where even the Czech studio itself has to officially comment on it again.

The developers at Bohemia Interactive recently posted a post on their website pointing out the whole problem, in particular that edited or misused videos made by players in Arma 3 have gone viral more than once, and therefore it began to spread in social networks, in the media or within government organizations. The studio also emphasizes that they help this phenomenon. nature of Army 3 as sandboxes with moddingin which you can depict almost any past, present or future conflict.

It is this creative freedom and the fact that it is possible to create an almost unlimited number of scenarios, landscapes, vehicles, weapons, uniforms or units in the game and in the Real Virtuality engine that brings the risk of using frames of both clean and modified versions to spread fake news. That is why Bohemia Interactive has developed a list of tips that should allow you to distinguish between real footage and recordings made with Army 3.

This list includes such things as low resolution, camera shake, no sound and human figures in motion, or an image that is too dark, i.e. attempts to cover up flaws and the fact that it’s just footage from a video game. Also, the presence of fictitious units, unrealistic-looking effects or user interface elements in the image allows you to determine that this is really Arma 3. All this can be seen in the recently published video illustration.

The creators are also asking players and UGC creators to treat their creations responsibly.. Therefore, when sharing videos, everyone should refrain from using clickbait captions, and a warning that these are footage from a video game and not a recording of real events is also appropriate. However, they also experienced it in the studio. instances of Arma series players themselves pointing out misused footage to help uninformed viewers determine what they are actually looking at.

“While we are flattered that Arma 3 simulates modern warfare so realistically, we are certainly not happy that it can be mistaken for real combat footage and used for military propaganda. This has happened in the past (Army 3 videos have reportedly depicted conflicts in Afghanistan, Syria, Palestine, and even between India and Pakistan), but these days the content has taken on more importance in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. We have tried to combat such content by reporting these videos to the platform operators (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), but this is very ineffective.

“Every day, for every deleted video, ten new ones are uploaded. We have found that the best way to address this issue is to actively work with the mainstream media and fact-checking organizations (such as AFP, Reuters, and others) that have greater reach and capacity to effectively combat the spread of fake news.” he said in a new report Pavel KrzyzhkaPR manager at Bohemia Interactive.
