Mick Gordon accuses id boss of lying about DOOM Eternal

Fans of the DOOM series will surely remember the incident associated with the release of the soundtrack for shooters. DOOM Eternal since 2020. When Bethesda unveiled the Collector’s Edition of id Software’s new project, they announced that the collectible would also include the soundtrack from Mick Gordon, the author of the musical accompaniment of the game. At the same time, Gordon became famous mainly thanks to the music from the restart of the DOOM series from 2016, from the fighting game killer instinct and from later issues in the Wolfenstein series by MachineGames.

However, the soundtrack did not make it into the game nor into the Collector’s Edition, and was released a few weeks later. Only only a minor part of the album was handled by Mick Gordon himself in terms of editing, mixing and generally completing the final tracks, which are created from sound files intended for the needs of the game itself.. He took care of the rest Chad Mossholder, lead audio designer at id Software. But as soon as the soundtrack was released, fans discovered that Mossholder hadn’t been working for a long time and that the quality of his compositions does not meet high expectations after the excellent musical score of DOOM 2016.

At that time, Mick Gordon himself tried to emphasize on social networks that only a small part of the songs came directly from him, and it was clear that he was not at all happy with the final product. Meanwhile Bethesda promised to release the soundtrack for everyone on streaming platforms, which, by the way, has not happened yet. He put the crown on it all Marty Strattondirector of id Software who chose Reddit out of all the places on the internet to post a very disturbing post basically put all the blame for the disappointing quality of the soundtrack on Gordon and Gordon alone.

Lekom it should have been clear that Mick Gordon’s career would not benefit Mick Gordon in any way.but he himself was more or less silent. Until now. Favorite composer published extremely extensive indicationsin which he accuses Marty Stratton of lying, which he wrote in his post on Reddit. At the same time, Gordon views everything that happens as a defense, and not as an inducement to attack anyone, and declares that the truth is more important to him than money.

According to him, he a six-figure sum was offered to keep him silent forever. In particular, that he would not contradict anything Stratton said, and that he would leave without comment anything related to DOOM Eternal, its soundtrack, and any project published by Bethesda and parent company Zenimax. And we thought Stratton’s biggest crime was the hideous hairdo he’s sported at QuakeCon and other events over the past few years.

If you look at Gordon’s report, you will find that it’s not just the fleeting, inaudible cries that usually accompany such incidents in the gaming industry. Not only does the entire report look like a lively critique of id Software’s management, using every possible detail and hard evidence, it’s so extensive that it would probably take up an entire book. With every line I read it seems to get worse.because the list of problems, bugs, and oversights from both id Software and Bethesda is almost endless. And at the same time, this is still “just” the release of a separate soundtrack for one game.

For example, in the report, Mick Gordon analyzes the information Stratton wrote on Reddit, citing what he considers to be false information and pointing out that Reddit as a platform tends to create angry mobs. AS WELL AS because the Internet will always remain the Internet, there is also a description of all the possible personal attacks and threats that Gordon had to endure for a long time. Including with threats of reprisal against him personally or against his relatives and relatives.

Another important point is the fact that Mick Gordon was only paid for half of the music for DOOM Eternal., as the final game and its marketing contains and uses twice as much music as Gordon had in his contract. For example, the last mission contains unfinished music that the composer collected only for temporary purposes and as a temporary solution. However, we find it in the final product as well as in the soundtrack.

With this example, Gordon also points to a problem with authorship. The aforementioned track from the last mission uses themes he composed. Bobby Prince for the needs of the original DUM 2 since 1994, but you will not find his name among the authors of musical accompaniment in vain. Instead of this each track is signed not only by Mick Gordon, but also by Chad Mossholder, although he basically just collected or renamed Gordon’s work.

Also striking is the amount of evidence that when the DOOM Eternal soundtrack was created, and the soundtrack itself was intended for the collector’s edition and standard sale. there have been last-minute changes in conditions, excessive overtime, communication problems, threats or withholding of important information.

Gordon gives many examples, again accompanied by relevant samples and documents, and one of the most striking cases is communication with Marty Stratton. For example, Mick Gordon pointed out from the beginning that It’s wrong for Bethesda to pre-order a Collector’s Edition with a Mick Gordon soundtrack that Mick Gordon wasn’t working on at the time the Collector’s Edition was announced.. The composer got his first chance at a deal to create a standalone soundtrack just two weeks before the game’s release. Such a thing, of course, goes against consumer rights in many countries, which Stratton refused to do, only to later invoke the same consumer rights himself due to the album’s delay and track selection.

Gordon also described a very heated Skype conversation with Stratton following the backlash over the release of the soundtrack. Despite all the arguments, the two men apparently agreed to move forward together. and that with mutual cooperation, they will try to pay it all off and appease the fans with a single statement. Stratton was supposed to have promised Gordon that he would send him a snapshot of the official statement the next morning, but this never happened. Instead, the CEO of id Software posted the aforementioned and, according to Mick Gordon, false post on Reddit.which was then widely distributed through all possible official and unofficial channels.

To make matters worse, after the release of the soundtrack, Gordon learned from the track’s metadata and other data that at id Software, under the direction of Chad Mossholder, a custom version of the soundtrack was in development for approximately six months without notifying Gordon.. And we could go on like this because we haven’t covered everything that the report says yet. So, if you’re interested in all of this, we definitely recommend telling your loved ones that they won’t be seeing you for a while, take a week off from work or school, and start reading. We’re just warning you that this is an unpleasant read.

Now, of course, the question arises what will happen next. Unfortunately, we do not know this. It is likely that Gordon spoke only now, because some contract or agreement has expired.but even so, we should not be surprised if we find ourselves at the very beginning of a protracted legal battle that will drag on for years. But if what Mick Gordon is saying is true, and it certainly looks like the truth, it should at least lead to the immediate resignation of Marty Stratton as director of id Software., as the report most paints a picture of poorly managed, unprofessional and almost illegal management. The question is also how Microsoft, as the current owner of Zenimax and Bethesda, i.e. id Software, can or can’t get involved in all of this.

It remains only to wait for the possible reaction of the other side. and again and again wonder what can happen in the gaming industry even because of something that we, as end users, can perceive as a mere trifle that most people today do not even remember. But as you know Unfortunately, this happens not only in the gaming industry., so perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised. In the end, truth and love will triumph over lies, hatred and Marty Stratton’s immoral hair? Let’s see.
