The head of Microsoft’s gaming division, Phil Spencer, in an interview with Wired magazine that mostly revolved around the Age of Empires series, also mentioned possible return of the Starcraft and Warcraft series. Asked if he plans to bring back the Starcraft RTS series, Spencer was evasive at first.
“First of all, right now I can’t decide what’s going on at Blizzard, Activision or King. So it’s all just talking and thinking about the possibilities.”
Antitrust authorities are currently considering Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision, so this diplomatic response is not surprising. However, Spencer then still carefully hounded fans of the brand.
“I would like to meet with the individual teams of Activision, Blizzard and King and talk about how to use these brands. It’s not something I can participate in right now. But the idea that I can think about what we are going to do with these brands is very interesting to me personally.”
Spencer also added that in the Starcraft and Warcraft series spent a lot of time playing these games, so he would probably like them back also from a purely personal point of view. The release of Starcraft considers it a turning point in the gaming industry in terms of esports, real-time strategy on consoles, and the way the story is told in that genre.
