When the eighth part of Resident Evil called Village came out in the middle of last year, I could hardly contain my enthusiasm. Honzas, who eventually reviewed it for Indiana, felt the same way. And he keeps trying to tell everyone that he doesn’t like horror movies. It was a complete, complete, and above all, great single-player experience that didn’t really require anything extra.. And the developers seem to share this opinion. Until now. Less than a year and a half after the game’s release, it’s time for the Winters expansion. Big update adding the ability to play the game from a third party point of view, new levels and characters to the arcade mode “Mercenaries” and, above all, Shadows of Rose Story DLC. With a price tag of 20 euros, this is not exactly a trivial purchase, so we decided to take a closer look at what you get for your money and whether it is worth returning to Resident Evil Village in our opinion.
Of course, we must start with the Shadows of Rose story expansion, which is the most important piece of news and could be called such. epilogue or last chapter of an original play. As such, it continues its ending and mostly follows the anguish of Rose, Ethan’s daughter, and her struggles with her troubled powers. This brings her to the very consciousness of the megamycete, where should he find the so-called cleansing crystalso that she could get rid of her abilities and, after a decade and a half, finally begin to live a normal life.

While not exactly an original premise, who knows, and not even particularly interesting at all, it actually provides a good rationale for why we will returning from famous places from the original campaign, but at the same time in a completely different and actually rather phantasmagoric context. Shadows of Rose doesn’t need to be completely limited in some ways, and it can pull things out of you that would otherwise be hard to justify even within the Resident Evil series.
However, we were able to complete the entire story expansion on Hardcore difficulty. approximately two and a half hours of playing time. Although it may seem like a little at first glance, it didn’t really bother us much in the final. It’s because of the overall pace and flow that Shadows of Rose offers. For all the time you almost never stop and something is constantly happening. In the end, you will be mostly “spit out” and full; as well as I dare say that I am quite satisfied.
This does not mean that something cannot be improved. Personally, I think the story could have been more interesting and fleshed out Rose’s character in more detail. I would also like to see more interesting enemies and the return of a few well-known characters or locations, for example. But I honestly don’t have to think so much about “what if” with this DLC and what I got, I’m pleasantly surprised at the end. Especially compared to the DLC we got for Volume 7.
It is a pity that the rest of the news could not meet such qualities. This is perhaps most true for third person modethat…exactly what you would expect, and at the same time a notch worse. Unlike, for example, the remake of Resident Evil 2, with the eighth part it is clear that the possibility of playing over the shoulder was not initially considered. The vast majority of cutscenes, even the smallest ones, still in first person, so your camera is constantly switching back and forth. At the same time, the atmosphere is just not the same anymore. Seeing with your own eyes, when you really don’t know what is behind you, and you don’t have a very wide view, helps this game a lot. However, I understand if there are those who in this case get sick because of the low field of view or simply prefer a different view. And I’m happy for these people because The Village definitely deserves to be played. But if you don’t have a problem with it, and you’ve even beaten the game, it’s actually completely pointless for you. It should also be noted that the Shadows of Rose expansion is only playable in third person, and while I would have preferred a first person view, it appears to have been built that way, and the cutscenes and design are consistent with that.
In any case, this brings me to the Mercenaries mode, but not least. He got everything two new locations – Blood River and Blood Village – especially three new playable characters. You no longer have to just play as Ethan, but you can also get your hands on Chris Redfield, Lady Dimitrescu, and Heisenberg. At the same time, each of the characters offers a slightly different style of play, so that everyone can choose what suits him. Although Chris has a firearm, he pays a lot of attention to his fists, with which he delivers incredible blows. Heisenberg has a hammer and can throw various projectiles at enemies. And Lady Dimisrescu has claws, she can call her daughters or throw her entire dressing table with a mirror at others. No, we are not kidding, you are seriously throwing the whole table at your enemies.
If you already liked the original version of Mercenaries, you’ll love this one too. But if their original appearance didn’t convince you too much, you’ll probably have a bit more fun – the new characters are more interesting than Ethan after all – but it’s not a major change in the finale. In particular, the two new levels seem unnecessarily small to me.
However, we have summarized everything that the so-called Winters extension actually has to offer. Overall, this is not bad news, but except for the story DLC, it’s not really something serious, but rather just a nice extra bonus that doesn’t hurt to have, but, with a few exceptions, doesn’t force you to buy the expansion itself. Only the Shadows of Rose story expansion, which is relatively short on paper, will do just that. on the other hand, it’s a quality, adrenaline-filled and charged ride that pays off. Especially if you really liked the original game or were interested in Ethan and Rose’s story.
Somehow, another thing came out of it all. This is separate from the Winters Addendum, but happened on the same day, so we thought we’d include it in this video as well. We are talking about multiplayer Re:Verse, which was originally supposed to be released along with the game itself a year and a half ago, but it only reached us now. And if you watched the stream where Ondra told me that Re:Verse would be a good game, you’re probably laughing right now. Re:Verse would be a good game if it was freebecause apart from the fact that you can remember a few positive and negative characters and locations, it does not bring anything at all.
It’s just a matter of choosing one of the characters. In particular, these are Jill, Leon, Claire, Ada, Hunk and Chris. They each have two special weapons, two perks, and one special ability. For example, my secret love Jill, armed with a pistol and an assault rifle, can lay mines and hit the enemy with a powerful knife attack. As a passive skill, he has increased attack on a successful dodge. Conversely, Ada Wong, who is armed with a crossbow in addition to a regular pistol, can kick Chuck Norris in addition to an exploding dart, and has a passive skill called Spy Wisdom. This allows her to recover a small amount of stamina when her health drops to a critical value.
So yes, we have a choice of several characters, each with their own abilities. There are six of them, and this is quite a decent number for starting an online multiplayer game. We can even improve them with the money we earn. So why is Re:Verse a bad game? The main reason is monotony. Several game modes are almost standard for online gaming. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag are the foundation of almost all quality online games. However, Resident Evil Re:Verse only offers classic Deathmatch. It always lasts five minutes, and the only thing that makes it special is that after the death of your human character, you do not get a classic respawn, but turn into one of the monsters. Who you turn into depends on how many virus vials you collect. If you fail to collect one, you will turn into Fat Molded, which you may know from Resident Evil 7. If you find even one vial, you have two options. For a short moment you will become the Hunter from the third part or Jack Baker from the seven. If you then find two T-virus ampoules, you will take on the role of Nemesis or Super Tyrant. As a rule, the more ampoules, the stronger the negative. And the stronger the villain, the more kills and the better the score.
Are you wondering why the score? Isn’t this a sports game? The order you are in does not depend on how many times you kill someone and how many times you die yourself. The score multiplies differently depending on how many enemies you kill in a row, what monster you kill, and whether you managed to neutralize the player who killed you. You can enjoy it all for two – yes, only two – cards. One of them is the police station in Raccoon City, and the other is the residence of the Baker family from the seventh episode. Constant repetition will simply tire you out in a few hours.
So yes, Re:Verse is a good relaxing game for fans of the series. If you miss familiar characters and locations, it’s a good idea to turn on the game and reminisce for a few minutes. But at the current stage, Re:Verse offers almost nothing., which would even make Ondra, as a lover of the whole universe, spend the whole day playing the game. Who knows, maybe this will change with future updates. We have more characters, maps and skins to look forward to. But now it’s nothing more than a not-so-good respite for a day.
