HW News Review from Week 44

According to AMD, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is designed to compete with the RTX 4080.

On Thursday evening, AMD officially introduced the Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards based on the RDNA 3 architecture. We devoted a separate article to information from the presentation itself, but after it ended, more news surfaced, which we will discuss here briefly.

We didn’t see any comparisons with Nvidia’s competitors at the conference, and now we know why that was. Lead architect Frank Azor spoke about this in an interview with PCWorld magazine:

“[Radeon RX 7900 XTX] it’s for the 4080 and we don’t have benchmarks for the 4080. That’s the main reason you haven’t seen any Nvidia comparisons.” Azor says. “The $999 card is not a 4090 competitor that costs 60% more, it is a 4080 competitor.”

It certainly makes sense, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is much closer in price to the RTX 4080, although it still has a $200 price advantage. It will be very interesting to see the first comparison. Hopefully AMD will provide it shortly after the release of the 4080, which hits the market on November 16th. And by the way, the new cards from AMD seem to be the main reason Nvidia canceled the 12GB version of the 4080. It simply wouldn’t stand a chance against the RX 7900 XTX/XT.

In any case, it is likely that AMD will also release an RX 7950 XT/XTX model in the future, which will really compete with the RTX 4090. Otherwise, it would not make much sense that the company regretted this designation so far. .

Problems with the new power connector continue

We recently wrote about issues with the new 12VHPWR power connector that the RTX 4090 uses. Some users have started reporting that it has partially melted and stopped working after some time of use. In recent days, there have been more such cases, but they all concerned the Nvidia adapters that come with the video card. Bye then.

Two new cases (1, 2) have already appeared on Reddit, in which this is a native connector directly from the source, without any adapter. This is a rather big twist in the whole situation, because it means that the problem will already be somewhere at the very base of the connector. Until now, it was believed that the error was only in the adapter from Nvidia. So we’ll see how it continues to evolve, but there are more and more cases every day, and AMD is already promoting itself a bit using the “good old” 8-pin connectors.
