Does Sonic and the gang represent the popular boogie-woogie without the dice?
At its core, Sonic and Friends is very similar to Man, Don’t Be Angry! We have a track to overcome and a team clearly identified by colors. But the main similarity ends there. Because the track that awaits you here is full of obstacles and boosts. The group you go to an event with is half the size of a traditional Člobrd, and you won’t find dice here either. It’s not that the characters don’t move through the squares according to well-defined values, but they are determined not by cursed dice, but by cards.
Yes, luck takes a very different form in Sonic and Friends than it does on a number of similar-looking boards. Instead of a cube, you’ll find a stack of movement cards that have a well-defined color, so you won’t get confused about which team you should move with. The catch is that the cards are always randomly dealt to you, so it’s entirely possible that you’ll end up with your hated sibling’s cards while they get their hands on a set of scrolling figurines in the color of your stable.
And it is in the element of more or less randomly scattered cards that one of the charms of Sonic and his friends lies. You never know what you’ll get. But as soon as you have the cards in your hand, the game begins, and it is up to you how you make your next move. The cost of individual parts varies from 1 to 6, just like the possibilities of the classic cube. You will use them mainly depending on what alternatives the playing surface offers you. At some points, it offers acceleration, the ability to draw a power-up card, or, conversely, a slowdown.
Therefore, at least in the case of competitive runners, you will often have to decide whether to help them or, conversely, slow their progress by throwing them into the movement-reducing thorns in the next turn on only one square. You will try to strengthen your allies and your own runners through the fields with the help of rings. Those that double the value of subsequently used cards and points where you can get bonuses.
You can encourage your runners
Power-up cards are another element that distinguishes Sonic and his friends from, for example, a very popular Man among children, don’t be mad! You can use them to speed up your own or even rival racers and thus add +1 to the value of a given card or super buff them, which will double their value. With their help, you can also reduce the effects of spikes and loops, which can decently stop progress on the track. Understanding the setup of all one-time upgrade cards is quite simple.
The recommended age level starts at the age of seven. However, it is possible to play Sonic and Friends with younger players. However, in their case, the need for knowledge of numbers is primary, since this knowledge is the main prerequisite for the child to enjoy the game. Another is your ability to explain certain elements to children in a way that can be done even without the more complex use of mathematics, after which you can start playing with them. It’s a little more tedious than with larger players, but makes sense, at least that’s been my experience with preschoolers.
The board game Sonic and Friends is guaranteed to grab the attention of everyone in the room.
The basic idea behind Sonic and Friends is simple to understand. Thus, after placing the pieces on the field, most of the participants quickly catch up, and the game subsequently picks up a good pace, during which you can have a lot of fun. Maps give a lot of room for tactics, even if at first glance it does not seem so. To some extent, we can say that they are better than bones. The moment you also understand all the principles of the game, a decent set of opportunities open up in front of you to support yourself and make the game more difficult for your opponents.
For myself, I consider the game a great alternative for younger players who are tired of unstable dice and want to try something new. In addition, the price tag for this thing is very favorable, so I would call it one of the most affordable boards that attract not only playability, but also visual processing. The strong point of the set is undoubtedly the theme, which activates the attention of many young players after watching it.
After a number of games with family and kids away from home, there are two things I would criticize Sonic and his friends for. The first drawback is the lack of more cards and the processing of the playing field itself, which could really offer more options if it were divided into several parts. The second is, perhaps, the figurines are too fragile for the age group, the construction of which could be a little more durable. However, these aspects, in my opinion, are the only drawbacks of Sonic and the minions.
