With recent news about Gotham Knights and A Plague Tale: Requiem, the discussion about frame rates in console games has flared up again. While players were used to 30 fps with the previous generation, the vast majority of PS5 or XSX/XSS games support 60 or even 120 fps. However, we will now have two anticipated games that offer nothing of the sort. And what is the reason?
Developer Lee Devonald of Rocksteady commented on this topic on Twitter:
“I would like players to understand what 60 frames per second means, what they are “losing” so that the game runs quickly. Also, when we have a current gen console that isn’t much better than the last gen.”
I wish gamers understood what 60fps means in terms of all the things they *lose* to make the game run this fast.
Especially since we have a current gen console that isn’t much better than the latest gen console. https://t.co/JNn1qYAbNP

In another tweet, he already bluntly tagged the Xbox Series S, calling it a “potato”.
However, Deries S exists. and Microsoft won’t let you run one without the other.
And a whole generation of games cropped by this potato.

With this position, Devonald angered a number of people who reacted to the tweet. We can mention, for example, Lance McDonald, who has long been involved in the technical side of games:
“Lol, this is not how games actually work. It’s like saying every PC game should run at 5fps because there’s a GeForce 730.”
lol, that’s how games don’t work at all. It’s like saying every PC game should be at 5fps because there is a GeForce 730. https://t.co/orJRwRrbTW

He was followed by the director of quality control at Keywords studio, who says that, of course, developers should optimize for the least performing platform of the generation, but this does not prevent them from optimizing for these other platforms. It just takes more time and effort.
Yes, if you ship multi-platform you need to optimize for the lowest performance, but there is nothing stopping you from ALSO optimizing for other devices as well. It just takes more time and effort to do so, and I’m guessing they had to downsize a bit.

So the real reason is lack of time or maybe finances? We will probably never know. In any case, the Xbox Series S excuse doesn’t quite apply, as even on this console we’ve seen a number of games manage to run at 60fps in the console’s two years on the market.
So let’s hope both upcoming games are the exception and other games offer 60fps again.
